I've got a Vankyo V600 for my budget setup... works well. Got a cheap Logitech 5.1 surround sound speaker system and a pulldown screen... came in around $600

I would love to see an episode on options for “hidden” living room projector/screen setups that can work with an existing tv. I’ve been trying to come up with an elegant solution for movie nights, where the projector screen works in front of an existing wall mounted tv, and the projector’s wiring/mounting is fairly easy (I have concrete ceilings/in condo which makes things interesting). Or, an elegant short throw setup.

I wish mainstream media went to 1440p (or 2.5k) before making the jump to 4k. I love my 1440p monitor and I would love making that intermediate step on my projector as well, instead of going full 4k.

That infared transmitter was pretty sweet. I’ve never seen anything like that. I e got a functional, but unfinished, theater room I’ve been working on for years. It’s painted, got equipment, just needs polishing up (shelves, hide the wires, hang the tv, etc). Good video and thanks for the tips.

A word of caution about the Vankyo projector. It only throws 270 lumens. So, it might be OK in a windowless basement but not in a room with any outside light coming in.

$125 - RX-A660
$180 - 3x Polk T15 (5.25 in driver)
$40 - CSI Center Channel (dual 4.5 in drivers)
$40 - PSW-505 (12 inch powered Polk sub)
$20 - YST-SW012 (8 in powered Yamaha sub)
$500 - Epson 2040 (1080p, 35000:1, 3D)
$50 - screen

$955 full HD 3D 35000:1 contrast 5.2.2 Dolby Atmos/DTS:X and up-mixing capable system

My point: Buy used from people who don’t know the value of their components.

Get the Yamaha, and add great speakers for the front, center, and eventually the sub.

Don't forget used gear. You can often get a lot more bang for your buck if you buy used. People divest from A/V equipment all the time, and that means you can get something that's not just decent but actually great for the same amount of money or less.

For example, I recently picked up a Sony 4K 7.2 receiver with HDCP 2.2 used for $50. It works flawlessly and looks like new.

I only have 5.1 in terms of Sony speakers (also bought used for next to nothing), but I have room to grow into 7.2, and I am ready when the time comes to pick up a 4K TV and 4K Blu-ray player.

Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Goodwill are your friends if you are willing to put in the time to find a deal and don't need something right away.

I recently got that screen from the 2nd option. Funny part is I don't even use it to watch stuff. When we watch stuff with my little Nebula portable projector we usually just project onto the double doors in our bedroom. I actually use it for the background of my Twitch stream. Having a cheap portable projector means I can just have it next to my desk hooked up to my computer as a 4th monitor projecting behind me. That avoids the claustrophobic nature & setup/takedown annoyances of a green screen. I use it like a nice middle ground between the no green screen nerd room look and still having the dynamic backgrounds one might want from a green screen setup. And if I wanted to entirely key out my background out all I have to do is project green & zoom my camera in just enough so only the screen is in frame behind me.

I am currently running a roku ultra to my projector with the same vizio 5.1 surround system you are using in the demo. I have a Wimius projector. I use a 30 ft. aux cord from my soundbar under my screen to the projector on a shelf in the back of my room. From your video I could move my roku near the soundbar and use the switch for a similar set up you are using for the cost of the switch and long hdmi cord. Am I looking at an appreciable sound upgrade with that or will it basically be about the same?

I’m starting out and trying to get my first budget projector. I was trying to decide between the Vankyo 630 you suggested vs the Optoma HD28HDR. How does it compare? I wonder how much of a projector do I want to start with, and what benefits are there really by paying a little more. But I don’t want to spend more than 500- 600 on one.

I had a bulb-based projector for over 10 years, watching movies on a regular basis, and still have half of advertized bulb hours. So LED or bulb is actually not a big deal for a home setup. IMHO, one should better loor for good native resolution and ANSI Brightness

Monoprice sells one of the best affordable 5.1 speaker systems (around $200) for the whole set. You'll need to add an a/v receiver.

hello great video, thank you. I am working on my home theatre and having issues on hiding my HDMI cable from the projector to AVR. my basement was a finished one as I bought it, and not able to fish HDMI cable because the ceiling is finished with Drywall.
if I am not able to bring my HDMI cable from the projector to AVR, how can I deal with a cat 6 cable? do you have any updated review videos of that product? how to connect, etc? much appreciate.
