You know what might make for a fun bit of content? Upgrading an eMac! I just put an SSD in mine after finally finding a good solution, one that apparently is PATA to some kind of M.2 internally. I threw one into my own G4 mini first, a machine I currently have dedicated to running a web server, and now I have Leopard installing on another of those SSDs in the eMac. It is an adventure taking one of those apart, but they have gorgeous built-in CRT displays and a decently fast G4 CPU, so I'd say they're totally worth it.

Tom, try to boot from a Leopard install disk and reset the password by going to the menu and go to Utilities and then Reset Password. I know it works in a regular install, but not sure about the Server edition. Worth a shot though because I'd hate to see you waste time on reinstalling. Best of luck! Also, Happy Birthday!

Use the command that undoes the command that you ran to enable first boot intro and run the command to change the password

firewire target mode investigate to retrieve its original serial if the install setup reset hasn't removed it ? it probably came with a licence for leopard server ?

My friend is giving me his Mac mini G4 early 2005 1.42GHz! but there's a catch - he says it asks for a password, not a login password, but a password is asked for every time you try to install an application or try to change any settings - do you know about that...? If so, do you (or anyone else) know if there's any way around that, or would I just have to reinstall OS X...? Any help would be much appreciated :)

The Intel mac mini power supply is compatible with the g4. Not the other way around it won't boot.
