The joke about the "language barrier" is a reference to how the languange of Wakanda that was used in Black Panther was Xhosa. John Kani (King T'chaka) and his son Atandwa Kani (Young King T'chaka) are Xhosa. So during production John Kani apparently came up with the idea that they must use isiXhosa as the language of Wakanda. But I don't think they had the time, budget nor cared enough to teach the actors the accent and pronunciation. As a result even Xhosa people had to read the English subtitles to truly understand what was being said. It became even worse in the movies that came after Civil War and the first Black Panther movie. This became a big joke on social media. So in this ad the "Wakandan" and the guy they are approaching are both speaking isiXhosa but the accents are so extremely different that the Xhosa guy cannot even understand him. Hence the line, "I thought they speak Ex-hoza here"

Also, yeah! The sandwich is the Big John. But clearly the queen wanted it so badly but probably assumed that her people know what it is.

As a South African I can tell you one thing, never mind some of our problems, we are truly free. Our humour says it all.

I was fortunate to have lived in Cape Town for 12yrs working in the film and modelling industry. SA's AD game is unmatched. They are big players in the field, so much so that it is one of the go to for many companies from all over the world to film movies and ads. They have been winning international awards in the AD industry globally for years now. The best time and experience of my life hands down. Chicken Licken hot wings!!? 🤤🤤 I miss those and that SA humour.

As South African we live in our planet in our heads we are the most craziest and creative people, we don't even take dangerous or bad things serious. We are very playful at most times and quick to forgive.

one of the reasons they are creative is because we aren't allowed to mention competitors by name in our adverts.

Chicken Licken's adverts have always been insane! They are so creative. South African commercials are good- top notch! And Big John is a chicken burger, not a sandwich.

It's the Milky Bar African. Haven't seen this ad, lost my sight five years ago, but that's not my main message. Want the OG of Chicken likin ads? Search Joe Mafela, the ads looked simple, but was nuanced in a specific African style. I still miss his theatrical works and appearances. He's up there with John Kani, Tichaka. Joe also brought the new jingle "it's good, it's good, it's nice." all spelling mistakes are mine, assistive tech can read back foreign surnames wrong. BTW look up older Nando's ads. They were epic. Unfortunately I can't share links here. Stay blessed. PS, I write too much but apologise for not seeing it live.

I'm South African and lived in Ghana for a while. I met a British family and one day we went to lunch in a small fishing village. We ordered off the menu where it shows a delicious hamburger. We ordered hamburgers for all of us. It came out of the kitchen with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and a juicy beef patty 😋, but.... They didn't have buns in this small fishing village so it had a 2 inch slice of bread at the bottom and also on top. The British lady started to cry...there were plenty of wine involved so 😭 she cried the ugly cry because this was NOT what she ordered. She drank too much and too fast. It's more than 10 years ago and we still laugh when we reminisce about that day and that lady. In Africa, we adapt or die.

Love their chicken. They were always my favourite when I used to live there. Them and Nando's.

Wakndla is actually Makanda, John Kani basically flipped the M to W.. Makanda is former Grahamstown but now changed to a Xhosa name

Just for interest sake, the first Chicken Licken was a road house in the deep south of Johannesburg. It was next to a well known Service Station called Uncle Charlie's. Then in the mid 1980s a new highway was built and the roadhouse was bypassed. So the owner did what Colonel Sanders did and started new store outlets in the suburbs, till it is the well known Chicken chain of today. I also was around in Cape Town in my youth when the first Pick n Pay started and the first Clicks store started in the early 1970s. It makes me old 😂
