Let’s not forget the Africans who caught other black people, not of their own tribe, and sold them to the Portuguese in the first place.

One more thing, slavery was common practice between African tribes.

You forgot to mention the Irish slaves, which were brought to America and sold cheaper than African slaves.

Blacks and Native Americans also owned slaves.
After the Civil War, thousands of Confederates moved en masse to Brazil where slavery was finally abolished in 1888. Their descendents still celebrate Dixie with an annual Festa Confederada where they dress antebellum and have a southern themed festival.

If you read missionary accounts of Africa, you will find out about the involvement of Africans and Arabs in the slave trade.

Slavery was and is terrible. It sucks that my fellow Americans were enslaved. But it wasn't me or my people doing that sht. My people have only been here for a couple of generations. The people who were behind it are long dead and lost the Civil War which was the most bloody war in American history.

Bartolomeo de las Casas in 1552 wrote 5 powerful tracts against slavery in the New World that were immediately adopted in many European countries partially out of humanitarian beliefs but also due to deep hatred for Spain and the Inquisition. As bad as slavery has been here, read about the human flesh markets in Central America to provide dog food. Fanaticism can obliterate any vestige of humanity. Good summary, Isabel!

Slavery did not exist 400 years. This is not Israel. Slavery in American colonies (Britain) existed from 1617 to 1787 (150 years) and then until 1865 in the American south. So in total only 82 years in America and 150 years under England.

I read a similar Confederate Rights book when I visited New Orleans. If a person would just sit and think how just one day of being in bondage would be, the empathy would grow

Per Dr. Louis Gates, host of Finding Your Roots, in the series, The History of African Americans, slavery was already widespread and commonplace in Africa before whites ever showed up due to tribal wars. When a tribe won a war, they took the prisoners of war and enslaved them. When whites got to Africa, the slave owners sold their own slaves to the whites. Were people still kidnapped and forced into slavery? Yes! But in no way shape or form are African ancestors innocent of the crime of slavery. I also just read in a book about the history of American labor, that orphanages were cleared and poor children in the streets of Europe were also kidnapped and forced into labor in the American colonies. Women were also tricked onto ships and then sold to be wives. Women with children were targeted more than those without children as the children were needed for labor. Evil between humans is everywhere and knows no boundaries. Or is it, the love of money? Yes, that is the root of most evil.

Slavery in Western Europe was banned between 1000 A.D. and 1200 A.D. under influence of Christianity, except for muslim-occupied Spain. When Spain and Portugal colonized the Americas they introduced slavery there. Since Western colonizers regularly conquered each other's colonies, all the colonizers started using slavery after a while. But later slavery was also banned in the colonies.

The term slave has its origins in the word slav. The slavs, who inhabited a large part of Eastern Europe, were taken as slaves by the Muslims of Spain during the ninth century AD. Slavery can broadly be described as the ownership, buying and selling of human beings for the purpose of forced and unpaid labour.

Slavery didn’t last 400 years in America. It ended in 1865 minus 400 equals 1465 North America wasn’t “discovered “ until 28 years later.

It was always funny how often people treated it like the USA was the main place to do this, yet it wasn't and if anything the only reason the USA had it, was because it was a popular trade. Let's no forget how every couple of years, there was another person who added a new law to stop the purchase of these goods from outside the country, then to the point of freeing them and even then made them citizens. It's a complex situation, but definitely isn't as bad as democrats tend to make it.
