Uruguay just like Paraguay also exist has independent nations since they were essential when it came to having buffer states in-between Argentina and Brazil. Definition for those that are not sure what a buffer state is "A buffer state is a country geographically lying between two rival or potentially hostile great powers. Its existence can sometimes be thought to prevent conflict between them."
