Using flashcards (such as Anki) to learn Japanese vocabulary... yes or no?

for me, Anki was a gamechanger. I arrived in Japan less than a year ago with sub-N5 Japanese. On Sunday I sat the N4 exam and feel pretty confident that I passed. My progress skyrocketed once I started using Anki late last year, and in a matter of months my kanji got to N3 level and over the last two months my vocab improved enough to have conversations now. If you use it right, it really works miracles, but you have to be dedicated and you have to be strict with yourself

Anki has given me the structure I need to learn Japanese! Combining the core 2k with Genki, Pimsleur, and WaniKani has created a really fun routine of challenge and learning, and it’s helping me progress really fast!

Anki is incredibly good for learning stuff you need to learn by heart. It trains your mind really well. You can learn A LOT of vocab in a short time using this. Especially for something like Kanji it is great. I think it was invented for that purpose too hence the Japanese name.

For me, who is not fond of memorizing, I find that seeing them in use or using them daily (talking to myself or the air) can help me memorize vocabulary.

I used Anki for hiragana and katakana though.

Anki doesnt feel like its the most effective form of learning but for its simplicity, reliability and ease of use its really a no brainer

Digital flashcards are wayyy easier and efficient to create than paper ones.

In paper you have to write by hand which makes it more time consuming.

In digital, you can download a deck of 1000 or more flashcards for vocab. It's also easier to review, and in applications like Anki, it has space repetition system set for you.

I used it to memorize hiragana and katakana, it was very effective. Made my life on duolingo much easier, later on. I don't think duolingo's way of teaching me that is good, I don't think it would have worked for me.

In my limited experience Anki (and probably other flash cards systems) is a great way to remember words I have already learned elsewhere, or when I insert one I hear IRL. It isn't a good way to learn words. I have also had a ton more success with creating a deck of my own than downloading and using someone's else's.

I believe it's good for REVIEWING. That means... You study from a vocabulary list, then you review, in that way you pass cards faster... You yes I know, no I don't know... Faster way.

Anki doesn't work for me :( I tried to memorize some words, but they didn't stay in my memory. But after seeing them a
couple of times in a particular context (while watching a video or reading a book), I can't forget them

Umm who said we learn best with only dictionary form alone. I think sentence cards are better because they train you to learn the usage of a word in context.

I feel that physical flash cards are much better, and it's just a supplement to the learning experience overall
