This is probably one of the comments that most accurately depicts my experience with flash cards

What I do as a work around is
1) story building around the random order of flash cards
2) recall the word in a 3rd or 4th language (not for everyone)
3) later modify flash cards based on my real-world experience with the word. I’ve even told some friends “ Oh yeah; I learned this word 3 years ago in a conversation I had with you on topic x”

I'm using the flashcards to learn sanskrit words/phrases and ITS WORKING. I'm learning words that I couldn't remember otherwise. I agree that there needs to be an element of understanding, you do need to ask yourself "why am I not remembering this" after repeated prompts. If I fail to remember a word after repeated prompts, I research the syllable by syllable breakdown of the word, (what each syllable means in sanskrit) and then by understanding the word better, I can recall it better. I don't think its a case of either understanding OR recall - both work well together for learning

I get what they are saying, but I would hope students would not exclusively use flashcards. Flashcards and as the semester progresses blurting and the Feynman technique plus practice tests.

sir i do have a problem .. its been a 8 months since i am trying to understand programming ... i graduated 3 years ago .. the degree did not improve me in anyway that could get me a job .. but now i realise.. that is not the problem.. the main problem is that i am not able to understand the flow of understanding material.. whether it by reading or listening .. i am out of the flow and trying really hard to understand stuff and i just found your video 4 mins ago and you explained about how mental fatigue is not the best way to understand and rememeber things, because it is just an indicator that i cannot take the mental load ... so please, what shall i do to understand things ..(even slowing down the video to 0.25x does not change my ability to understand things .. because i think i am out of the flow of what they are trying to explain .). another thing is i forget the concepts i recently learnt 2 months ago and it seemed new to me .. another thing is .. some times basic logic seems so new to me .. the guide does not explain those things because it seemed common knowledge to them .

I have had pretty good luck with home grown flashcards that include pictures, sound, spelling and commentary. I find them useful in condensing notes into an easy to access form, with built in test. They are pretty useless if they are simple packaged decks, with limited content. I have not used them for anything except language so far
