How To Use Anki Like A Pro [Full Step-By-Step Walkthrough]

One of the most powerful study tools out there for med students is Anki. But how do you use it like the pros who get honors?

There is no such thing as the perfect study tech stack. Everyone will have their own note-taking, flashcard, calendaring and reminder apps. For flashcards in particular, there’s Quizlet, Brainscape and many others. But what I often caution my students is to be careful about using tools just because your friends or someone you read or watch recommends it. Not every flashcard app fits the way you study. In fact, the wrong one can take up so much valuable time for studying.

Anki is an awesome app that I’ve used in med school all the way to this very day as a medical resident. Yes, it is not for everyone, but for those who are gearing towards getting better grades, having less stress studying and improving retention, then Anki can most definitely help.

Yet, it's not enough to just learn how to use it; you should also learn how others used it to blend with their studying. The exact same way I used Anki to graduate with honors and to keep up with my M.D. journey as an internal medicine resident may not work for you. But there are pieces and ideas that you can steal and implement to level up your studying and be the best med student you can be.

Quick note at 14:20: You can actually export all the slides to image files to save you the time of screenshotting every slide:
* Go to 'File' > 'Save As' or 'Export.'
* Choose the image format (e.g., JPEG).
* Select the location and click 'Save' or 'Export.'"

I am a premed student and to be honest after one year at college i learned the hardway that making notes is a waste of time. first of all i would never go back to look at the notes i made. and if i did go back to look at i wouldn't even be able to understand. secondly i would end up rewriting what was on the lecture slide onto my notes. And i found that i would always end up going to the lecture slides to actually learn the content. lastly i would never assign equal prioty to all the different topics i would learn. instead i would find myself going back and forth between the same topics. to conclude i want to say that you are a LEGEND for showing us these techniques. especially the screenshot Lecture slide style anki notes. i feel like this particular anki technique was what i have been waiting for my whole life. it so unbelievably easy to do. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I HAVE SUBSCRIBED BTW. 😉

I want to thank you for taking the time to make this video. I'm using these tips to help with my cloud engineering studies. Your advice works so well with a lot of the architecture diagrams and complex processes that were hard to put in flashcard format before, and you've simplified it down into a nicely repeatable process. Awesome video!

Great video Doc! I was comparing Quizlet to Anki, and your video made me realize all the benefits that Anki has to offer. This was also a very useful intro to getting up and running. Thank you.

I have to say this was the best video I've seen on Anki yet. Things that were not covered in several other videos like if you have an urgent topic you have to review before an exam and how to create cards were explained perfectly. Thanks!

About a year and a half ago I was desperately looking for someone to break down Anki like this for me so I could use it for MCAT studying but I could not find anything online and my med school friends were not good at explaining it to me lol. I gave up on using it but now I really need to figure it out. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! This was seriously so helpful. God bless you, brother.
A couple things that I wish were also included in this that I think would be really helpful:
1. How to adjust the settings under "options" which controls the steps in minutes, maximum reviews, what the easy bonus/modifiers do, as well as the lapses, etc.
2. How to sync your cards to your other devices like phone/iPad and how to reverse sync them without messing it up (download vs upload)
3. How to use the burying/suspending features
4. How to use a controller like a PS4 controller or something along those lines to make it easy/quick/fun to go through cards. I had to get a friend to help me with it but that was a while ago and forgot how to do it myself now.
Thanks man, I appreciate your help!

Thank you so much for this great over view!
The app can look overwhelming (the UI certainly isn't inviting) but your walkthrough is an absolute life-saver!

I'm a retired nurse and a lot of that I still had to learn, so I feel your pain. Back in my day, the glory of anything computers was simply not there for us. I just wanted to say thank you for spelling this out so clearly for us. I was just about ready to use regular index cards until I found your video and one by youtuber Fluo Gray on the complex Excel imports. One thing I am interested in is finding decks to download and I had no idea how to do it and the addons look essential to me. Again, thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU! 🤩

This is The most efficient way to revise portions, now because of the lockdown you are stuck at home without teachers suggesting you to revise so that you dont forget. This is amazing. Thank you Laksh for the video, its very clear and helpful. Should've found about it earlier.
