My sister started college in 81. Her Celica was wore out so my grandparents sold her their 78 Corolla for the $950 she got out of her Celica.
My sister drove it until 83, when I started college.
It had about 70K miles on it when I got it.
I drove it through Grad School and kept driving it.
It was a bare bones car. Vinyl floor and upholstery. 4cyl, 4 spd manual transmission, rear wheel drive.
Everyone kept telling me that I should buy a new car after graduation but I had student loans.
I drove it until it died in 02 with a whopping 488K miles.
The drivers seat was so wore out that I put in a phone book and a pillow with a seat cover to hold everything in place.
It was burning a LOT of oil when it died.
I bought a new Camry in 02.
In 11 my needs changed so I traded my Camry in on a new 11 Rav 4WD Limited with a 3.5 V6.
I’m still driving my Rav and will continue driving it until I turn 70 years old.
I’ll replace it with either a Venza or treat myself to a Lexus hybrid and drive it until my death.
I’ve had convertible’s and pickups along the way, for fun or the pickups for work around our property, but my daily drivers have always been Toyota’s.
That’s not bad having to only purchase 4 daily drivers during a lifetime.

Used Corollas are expensive right now, probably have to get a 12 plus year old one now for $10000. Dealers want way too much for them.

Maintenance is key for keeping an older car going longer. Look into adding Engine Ice brand coolant right after buying it, with a new thermostat. Keep up with engine oil and transmission fluid changes. Ideally, for the hottest and coldest days of the year, do not even start the engine and take vacation days. If you live where it gets very hot or very cold, look into adding an extra cooler or heater for the engine and transmission.

Always look for full service history and bear in mind the bigger the car, the bigger the bills. I always buy new but keep my cars for at least 10 years and service them at the main dealer. My ex-wife's VW Touran (bought new in 2004) has done half a million km and is still going strong!

I have been driving a 2012 Ford Escape for the past 3 years now. So far it's been reliable.

Very informative. Please include reviews on small cars like spark.

Hard to argue with any of that. Of course, the problem with small cars is that so many people drive huge, heavy vehicles of one sort or another and surviving a collision with one is less likely than in large cars with lots of crumple zones.

Nice video my top picks are Civic and Fit 2015 Corolla is better however lack of driving pleasure...
Used Prius is complicated so Accord and Camry over Prius minus fuel efficiency factor..

My daughter totaled her 2013 Prius. Ended up buying a 2014 Honda Civic. Both are great cars.

I loved my 2000 Mazda Protege and drove it until 2017 when it was totalled in an accident. :(. The car was in perfect shape up until then. I miss it! It ran perfectly and my mechanic was amazed at how well it was put together and how well it ran even at 17 years of age.

Hey Prymak.

I am a subscriber and I am closely following your update. I live in Alabama USA, planning to buy new Mid Size SUV and probably go with either New CRV or RAV4. But I’m not from here and probably will go for either finance or complete pay. So need help like what is a process to finance and how to get credit score for that? How to deal with price negotiations, destination fee, tax or any other hidden costs that apply for buying new car or if I want to lease? Please help me all details that apply or suggest me what all things I should know which will help me?

A 2011 Honda Civic is selling for around $14K. Iseecars pricing is not for this market, but your recommendations are spot on. Thank you.

You cant argue with the facts, your info is right on the mark! Hay everyone, heads up! though there may be other cars included, this selection wont steer you wrong. 'my best advice, is search through older issues of Consumers Reports car sections! They have info on most all vehicles.that they buy, and test out. old ones and new ones!
