Memento - Ending Scene

Watching it thinking Teddy's the villain only for everything to turn upside down when you realise.
Nobody's innocent but the horrible feeling of knowing that Lenny's sentencing this man to die knowing full well the outcome is so daunting. Natalie uses Leonard to get Dodd. Teddy uses Leonard to get drug dealers. Leonard uses himself to get Teddy.

Memento is still my favorite and his best in my opinion.

David Julyan's score deserved more credit. The music gave this small scale, self contained story qualities of a tragic epic, reflecting the sad reality Leonard (partially) created for himself. Julyan's work on The Descent is great too.

Here's my interpretation of the movie's plot:

Lenny's wife was raped by a John G, who also caused Lenny to develop his memory condition. The cop who was assigned to the investigation of this case was also named John G (Teddy). Fuelled with anger, Lenny sought vengeance and Teddy helped him kill the miscreant. Lenny's wife, meanwhile, was distraught seeing Lenny so changed (with the condition he had developed). He accidentally killed her with an insulin overdose. Unable to overcome guilt for the same and absorbed in a sense of lack of purpose in life, Lenny used his faulty memory as an aid to fabricate a convenient alternate "reality", wherein he is supposed to kill the "killer" of his wife, John G (in actuality, John G had not killed his wife). He imprints this "reality" upon his mind through conditioning and countless notes, and also has invented the story of Sammy Jankis just to intentionally forget his own story; i.e., by attributing it to someone else (the real Sammy was just some irrelevant guy). The other characters of the movie — Natalie and Teddy — use Lenny as a pawn for their own purposes (while also, somewhat, empathizing with him for his condition) — Natalie uses him to save herself from Dodd, while Teddy uses him to get James Gammel (Natalie's husband, and a drug-dealer) dead.

At times, in the plot, Lenny comes to the realisation that what he believes in is fabricated (as he does in this scene), but willingly chooses to live in a comfortable life of lies rather than confronting himself with the inconvenient truths.

He _does_ 'lie to himself to be happy'.... so that he can still have a purpose to his life.

The film is indeed a masterpiece for greatly portraying the significance of a sense of purpose in one's life. Sadly, it's underappreciated

I don't think Leonard's perpetual "cycle of vengeance" could go on forever. I'm quite sure that without Teddy covering his back, the police would eventually catch up to Leonard and take him into custody, ultimately resulting in him being placed in some sort of mental hospital. An amnesiac can't just go around aimlessly hunting people with no consequences.
