Sherman Tank Commander on How to Get Out if You're Hit

Lieutenant Colonel Don Carmichael, joined the Army straight out of high school at 17 years old in 1943 because there was a "big war" going on and he felt obligated. He fought with the 113th Cavalry from Normandy to the Elbe River. He was an assistant driver, gunner and tank commander in Fox Company, 113th Squadron. After WWII was won, he considered himself a professional soldier and went on to fight in two more wars — Korea and Vietnam — before he felt his obligation had been fulfilled.

Throughout Carmichael's 30-plus military career, he rose from Private to Lieutenant Colonel.

Recorded on March 30th, 2015.

Lt. Col. Carmichael passed away on March 15th, 2021.

The full version of this video was posted in 2018. Assuming that's when the video was recorded, this man was 92 years old at the time of recording. Imagine heroically serving in WW2; Korea; and Vietnam, and still having such vigor and vitality at 92. God-like genetics.

God bless you. I was an infantry man in Iraq. All in all, not too much action there. Volunteered a year later in Afghanistan with a truck company to gun and dismount. Crazy deployment. Very violent but the crews became very close knit and we had some good times. My experience seems to parallel many of the accounts of ww2 tankers and truck companies in Vietnam. As a result, I am now fascinated with these old tankers. Thanks for sharing and may God bless this man.

Was going to say I didn't think there were any American WW2 tankers left but I noticed this was recorded in 2015, and he passed away on March 15 2021. Can't believe he also went on to fight in Korea _and_ Vietnam, dude is a certified hero for his service.

"in [input major conflict here] that's something I volunteered to go for...". I really hope there's more footage of this interview coming of this great man.
It's rare to find a world war II guy these days, let alone a guy that went from private in world war II, to Colonel while fighting in Korea and Vietnam.

*I'd love to sit and talk to this man.
