Field Trip: Dolby Headquarters

Produced and financed in collaboration with the Dolby Institute. Want to learn more?

We've all seen the Dolby logo, whether it's in a theater or on our electronics at home... but what does Dolby actually do? RJFS went on their first road trip to visit Dolby HQ in San Francisco to find out.
Dolby sponsored this video and our trip to their new headquarters to give us a look into how their technologies have affected films past and present, as well as some sneak peeks into what they're developing for the future.

The whole trip was incredibly fun-- we met some really cool people, and there was so much to nerd out about. We hope it gives you a new appreciation for all the science and creativity that goes on behind the scenes (or in this case, the laboratory!)

Questions for us about the trip, or Kevin's excellent jacket? Hit us up in our forums:

Very special thanks to Glenn Kiser and Oren Williams for being such excellent hosts!

The new Lucid Air will be the first car with Dolby Atmos, I bet it'll be awesome.

You guys should check out ambisonics. It's like the audio equivalent of 360 spherical video.

It uses some pretty cool math to basically simulate a spherical array of microphones, which can give you incredible localization if done properly. The real beauty of it is that you can down convert the ambisonic format to any number of speakers in any orientation on the fly, including binaural and soundfield systems, so you don't have to master for individual setups.

It's not widely known or available, but I hope it gets more popular, because it's pretty awesome and would be perfect for VR systems.

Thats a good example for nice kinds of "product placement" if you wanna name it that. Respect! Keep doing that kind of stuff if someones pays for it it doesnt matter it seems all really natural! :)

Does Dolby have their own software for film production to do stereoscopic 3D or we can use other software such as Nuke, Davinci Resolve, or Autodesk Flare to do it and still able to show at Dolby Theaters?

That was the perfect way to end the video. Basically the same thing I would do.
