Field Trip: Dolby Cinema

RJFS is back!! In this video, we road trip back to Dolby HQ in San Francisco to check out their brand new research lab and theater.

Utilizing Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and comprehensive design, our friends have created an incredible movie-going experience. It sounds dorky but as film nerds, we were genuinely blown away by the sound, visuals, and thoughtfulness that went into building the theater.

To check out your local Dolby Cinema, click here:

Very special thanks to Glenn Kiser, Nancy Gribler, and Alejandro Arroyo for making this video happen and for being such excellent hosts!

Another great video we found on the evolution of Dolby surround:

"All speakers are required to be full range."

Speaking as an insanely picky and annoyed audio engineer of 40 years, I heartily approve of this message.

I watched Joker in a Dolby Cinema in Toulouse, i didn't know anything about this technology before but i was mindblown on the quality of the sound and visuals, i went back to watch it 3 more times.

Damn cool technology. I always love people who push the envelope to the limit, and beyond.

I haven't been to Dolby cinema but I plan on going to one this weekend. I just appreciate the fact that they seem to give a fuck about the viewers in the fact that they take so much time to work on the image, sound and actual experience in going to their theatre. I know it will be an amazing experience!

Great video. I loved hearing more about laser projection. This, to me, is a technology that *should* have gone mainstream at the same time as the 3-D resurgence that began around ten years ago, because when you put on a pair of those awful polarised glasses, you immediately lose about 30% brightness and contrast. I'm curious to hear more about the 'blacker blacks' too. Is that something to do with the fact that, unlike standard projector lamps, it doesn't need to 'light' the entire silver screen even when it's showing 'black'?

I was watching this in my completely dark home theatre and the white "Dolby institute" screen in the end bedazzled me. Sorry for spelling errors, I cant see anymore.
The video was absolutely awesome I am waiting for more content.

I agree with the no popcorn politics. It distracts from the movie and spectacle.
In my country we eat it a lot. But mostly in the park

There’s a Dolby Cinema an hour away from me, hoping to watch Godzilla x Kong there with some really special people in my life. So excited! 😄

I think I am going to watch Endgame in Dobly Cinema and not IMAX. IMAX needs to catch up with recliner seats!

Now tell them to just come up with a Universal HDR Standard. Preferably one that doesn't use their workflow, and instead use a workflow like ACES.
HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HGL, Advanced HDR... HDR standards are a nightmare for those shooting and mastering nowadays!
If history has shown us anything, is that whenever there is a "format/standard war" the non-proprietary standard always wins.
Just come up with a Rec.2020 covering standard and a universal workflow for the entire industry!

BTW these color gamut coverage demos that they show are completely BS with them turning down the saturation and contrast on the "regular" video. We're all watching this in Rec.709 monitors.

I'd like to see the dolby workflow as it related to Adobe products and how us amateurs could potentially make use of it! Perhaps Rocket Jump could do a video implementing this workflow from filming to editing! This is very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

Can there be a IMAX Dolby Atmos collaboration?

Dolby cinema should come to Nigeria. It's a really huge market over here. We have the highest population in Africa and the biggest movie industry in Africa as well. It would be great in Nigeria

Unless the movie is shot in IMAX, Definitely go see a movie in Dolby Cinema where the movie is meant for Dolby Vision and dolby atmos
