A joke summing up the Balkans:

One day, a magical fairy (Samodiva) visits a farmer in the Balkans. She flies up to him and declares, "I will grant you any wish that your heart desires. But know that whatever you wish for, I will grant the same to your neighbour but twice as much!"

The farmer thought for a moment and then said, "Take out one of my eyes!"

A correction : First of all thanks to your comments I was able to see the mistake : The city of Xanthi was misplaced in Macedonia instead of Thrace. I am very sorry about that. I wanted to put Xanthi on map then I didn't, but instead of showing the town of Kozani, I copied the title from Xanthi without realising. I am very sorry for that, and I hope it will not trigger you so much :) .

There is a term for that called Balkanization, it is when a region broken up into small regions or states that are uncooperative and hostile toward each other. It is used often in geopolitical texts.

I'm Bulgarian and I don't hate anyone, matter of fact I like our neighbors, all of us felt like we were screwed up by our neighbors and we are right, all of us suffered and only lost by this wars. History is history can't change it, learn to respect each other and live in peace!

My first job after graduating from high school 15 years ago was at a clothing department store. I worked part-time to put myself thru college. For one reason or another, there was a very large number of Eastern European immigrants from Serbia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Hungary, and a few from Croatia who I also worked with there. Despite some of their religious and cultural differences, they all got along with each other very well, and most of them were able to converse with and understand each other’s languages more than I expected (some of their languages were even mutually intelligible, in fact). All of them were extremely nice and supportive towards me, especially since I was the youngest and newest one of the department crew, while the rest had been working there for years already. I have a lot of respect and admiration for Balkans people. I hope that despite all of your differences, and painful memories from the past, that you will move in the direction of reconciliation, and realize that you are all more similar than you are different. It’s possible. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Much love and God bless you all ☺️

In Bulgaria, the resolve to reunify all lands lost to the Berlin Conference was incredibly strong. In fact, Bulgarian resolve and determination to fight and die for the Motherland and reclaim the territory with a majority of Bulgarian population has been the reason why we were capable of mobilizing up to 1 milion men at the end of World War One. Bulgaria had around 4.5 milion people living in the final days of WW1, meaning that almost up to 25 % of the population was sent to the front and one man fighting with the determination of 10, just so that we could've reclaimed what we believed was rightfully ours in the past centuries. Now, it's all over, we can only contemplate and learn from the mistakes that were made in the pass.
In Bulgaria, we have a special day to remember the awful mistake that was made after the betrayal and attack on our former allies. On the 16th of June, 1913 the order to attack our neighbours on the former Western front came from non other than our Tsar ( King ).From that moment on, the 16th of June would always be remembered as the Day of Criminal Madness in Bulgaria.

My grandma's uncle was one of the officers at the siege of Adrianopole. He was a captain in the Bulgarian army. He died of his wounds at the age of 26. There is a picture of him in a crudely put-together casket on the battlefield. You can see all his men around him with just the most awful, morose expression you can imagine.
