We continue to explore the true size of armies in Warhammer 40,000. This particular episode focuses on a Cadian Line Infantry Regiment. But to preface this subject we first explore the role of Regiments in the broader Imperial Guard and the myriad forms they can take. We then choose the Cadians as the prime example of the Imperium's finest source of Regiments.

Time is spent reviewing the history of Cadia and its martial characteristics. The Cadian armed forces are described from the Planetary Defense Forces of its Interior Guard to its Shock Trooper and Elite Kaskrin Units which are recruited for service across the Imperium. Several high level examples of their organization is presented. Finally we then review an indicative model of a Cadian Infantry Regiment in 3D from ground up.

You forgot to mention the esteemed representative of the adeptus mechanicus who are attached to regiments in order to maintain their sacred machinery. Typically a company will have 1 engineer or lower ranking machine priest while the overall regiment will have a mechanicus contingent with several tech priests servitors and possibly even a magos.

The priesthood of mars will take note of this transgression and may revoke their services to the adeptus invicta branch of the administratum.

The fact that the Guard was holding strong and pushing them back until Abaddon the Greatest Whiner threw a hissy fit and destroyed the planet because he wasn't a good enough general to match a mortal will forever be one of the greatest Ls Chaos has suffered.

Fear not history fans, we've got a lot more content on the way on (Battle of Plataea part 2, Rise of the Mali Empire, True Size of the Battle of Cannae, and more). Just fell sick the last week so I wasn't able to get these out as soon as intended.

Love the 40K, Napoleonic, and Roman content!

I love the Guard because there is something much more appealing about average men and women fighting for the people beside them and for their love of humankind, often charging into certain death against the unspeakable horrors of an uncaring universe. Those people are brave, not 300 year old 9ft tall emotionally stunted teenagers in power armor. The Astartes know no fear, but bravery is facing your fears.

Even Cadian Regiments can vary wildly in size, Examples such as the 180th Infantry Regiment which numbers ~360 fighting men, including Commissars, Ogryns and Psykers (but not including the 83 preachers and 101 menials of the ministorum) to the legendary Cadian 8th, which numbers ~8, 000 at full strength. Some Regiments are fewer than the Company size listed here, others are almost double the size of the Regiment in this video's example.

And then there's the Krieg Regiments where even just their companies dwarf even the largest Regiments of other Guard worlds.

Cadian born white shields are always enlisted into the guard. Half of them stay on world, the other half are deployed across the stars. Kasrkin are also recruited from the youth army and trained extra hard from their teens, being used as the backbone of the defense of a Kasr and being rarely deployed outwardly.

Cadian regiments may also be deployed as organic combined arms formations becoming FAR more complex. Commissars are also generally not attached on the platoon level. Especially not in cadian regiments.

I left my homeworld the night it died, and I've been fighting for its memory ever since. We Tanith are a dying breed. There are only about twenty hundred of us left. Gaunt only got away with enough for one regiment. The Tanith First. The First-and-Only. That's what makes us 'Ghosts', you see. The last few unquiet souls of a dead world. And I suppose we'll keep going until we're all done. -Trooper Dermon Caffran, Tanith First and Only

@22:05 I noticed how the Whitesheild's formation is ragged and undisciplined showing how they are new and untrained, while the other veteran companies are in perfect alignment. Well done.

I suspect that's what not mentioned here are a bunch of regular trucks and truckers for the logistics train. The overall campaign logistics will probably be handled by Munitorum personnel, but a regiment likely has the ability to truck around water, food, fuel, spare parts, ammunition and men over its own designated operational area. Unfortunately, lightly armored, non-combat vehicles isn't really anything GW ever focuses on, so we don't really know what they look like or how prevalent they are. It just... makes contextual sense for them to exist. Not everything can be carried in an APC, and not everything SHOULD be carried in one either, especially if there's a nice, paved road available where you can drive over 30-40 km/h, lol.

This is fantastic. It is the most non-lazy production on Youtube for this topic. Loved it.

You should cover the Death Korps if Krieg. They use combined arms 'Siege' regiments.

After reading Guant's Ghosts (not a Cadian regiment) these numbers seem accurate for what you'd expect within a realistic regiment.

Well done, another great video.

One thing to consider is that the Imperial Guard regiment is a force designed for space lift. The logistics tail is presumably going to be supplied by the Navy or the local government when they arrive in-theater. Transporting regiments to their theater of operations isn't fast or cheap. So IG regiments would be heavier on combat power and lighter on support than their PDF cousins.
