I couldn’t believe what I was reading. The Emperor personally knew these Custodians, probably spent most of his time with them, and other than the primarchs and Malcador were the closest thing to what could be his friends.

It broke my heart when he was trying to save one of them from being swallowed by a demon wall, and the custodian was screaming :/

The new day, the new was for Custodes to fail. Not to mention, those who broke from the mindcontrol, later killed themselves.

Epic scene: The Custodeans were not "possessed" as such. But half of them made puppets of Horus (only half. The rest collapsed and refused to reach for their weapons, knowing they would attack the Emperor if they did).

And boy oh boy, was the Emperor PISSED OFF when he broke them out of the "shell of darkness".

What a lot of people in the comments don’t understand is the Custodes we’re essentially in the warp and Horus at this point is on the verge of becoming the fifth Chaos God with all the powers of the other 4 behind him.
The Custodes were not the only ones to fall, even Rogal Dorn is close to being turned by the Blood God when the assault on the Vengeful Spirit occurs.

There was a story where a grey knight was possessed by a genestealer which feels similar to this, where there defenses weren't broken through, but worked around. Horus controled the custodes bodies but not their minds.

Its crazy how quickly the Emperor obliterates dozens of Custodes, including Terminators.

His wrath at what he had to do....should have Horus terrified

It was the most grim dark chapter I've ever read. It was told through the perspective of a custodian that resisted. The part where the emperor asked if any custodes weren't able to carry on and wished for a mercy kill was disturbing. Seeing custodes as weak willed is an alien concept.
