The Mystery of the Milky Way's Missing Stars

Astrophysicists think there should be many more stars in the Milky Way due to the large amount of dust and gas surrounding the galaxy's perimeter. Something is holding this vast field of matter on the galaxy's doorstep, preventing it from being drawn toward the galactic center and used in star formation. What force could overpower gravity on such a scale?

I think the video description goes a different direction to the way I think about it.If you have a determinant distance between any stellar body where gravity / magnetism overlaps it stands to reason they wouldn't be edge on, there would be considerable distances between each stellar body formation and the edges would have a set location they could not pass without being drawn into a solar system, similarly there would be a set location between stars where stellar bodies couldn't form, giving an image of a star, bordered by gas, with more gas on one side and another star the other side of that. Like the famous vase/faces mirage. As the galaxy and other galaxies are moving through space with spin it stands to reason for me that the gases would be retained in the spirals and in the cloud formations but would be more dormant at the top and bottom - potentially, as argued in the video, more volumous.I also differ in some respects in relation to the dependence on the term gravity as I strongly believe that the impact of electromagnetism is understated.  A discussion regarding alternative-plane orbits is a topic I'm looking forward to, in terms of focused debate.The rings of Uranus are in the alternative plane, albeit very young by estimates. The likelihood of a planetoid having an orbit such as this is unheard of, even in single planet systems.I think the best way to explore the theories on gas retention around the top and bottom of the galactic disk would be best above superconductors in orbit, rather than using fluids under local gravity.
