The video is split into two stages to show how the High Low Wing Chun technique can be used to block powerful kicks.

STAGE 1 (start to 1min 43 seconds)

TRADITIONAL STAGE: PRACTICE THE TECHNIQUE AGAINST A STRAIGHT KICK

Here we introduce the theory of the Wing Chun technique of High Low Gaan Sao and the importance and interchange with the Wing Chun technique of Lau Sao to control a kick. Traditionally in Wing Chun the High Low Gaan sao is used against a straight Kick. This is non abrasive and allows you to be very soft.

Note here that we discuss the traditional use of the High Low Gaan Sao relative to open hand Wing Chun strikes and kicks that would not be appropriate for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training or San Shou (San Da).

STAGE 2 (1min 43 seconds to End)

NON TRADITIONAL WING CHUN TRAINING

For Wing Chun vs Muay Thai or use in San Shou (San Da) Kickboxing. We run through how to use high low Gaan Sao in a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) or Kickboxing context.

Wow, I can't believe I haven't seen this video. This was awesome. These are the explanations that make me want to do Wing Chun.

Very nice. Very practical and realistic too. Anyone doubting this should look closely at K1 fights, particularly Dutch kickboxers. They have a very similar way of catching head kicks and it works consistently

I'm not sure I see this working. There is a lot of power in a roundhouse. The way it plays out in my head is that, if it lands flush on the guard, even if it doesn't knock you out there will still be enough force transferred to unbalance you and possibly knock you down. Consider also the fact that a strong blow to the head, even if defended against, will momentarily stun you. In this state, you will find it extremely difficult to catch a head kick. This is why you see fighters catch body kicks all the time, but retreat and guard against a head kick, defending against the kick at the absolute end of their range where the power of the blow is significantly weaker.

Sifu, I am not fully convinced that the majority of wing chun practitioners can take on muay thai fighters. The amount of force coming from kicks, knees and elbows is devastating

Beautiful application! Would love to utilize this in san da.

It will be a heck of a risk when a kick that can be as hard as iron is engaged right at the face, it would be hard without boxing gloves but its an outstanding strategy against a Thai fighter.Awesome video

If you do that against a full force kick while wearing mma gloves, will the kick take your head off?

Sorry but that technique of raising the elbow and then readjusting to grab on to the leg would require super-human timing and the way your slipping your arm away in order to go from the block to the gripping of the leg, is more that likely gonna see you knocked out

Yes, if someone his kick feels like a feather flying against your head, then you can block it. If a powerfull roundhouse will is going towards your head, it will go right through that weak defense.
