YoKai Watch 1 - Underrated and SO GOOD!

YoKai Watch made it's way to the West in 2015 on the 3DS, and it was one of the best games on the 3DS that I've ever played. In Japan YoKai Watch was surging in popularity at that time, but unfortunately it never really took off in the rest of the world. Despite this, I still think that the first YoKai Watch game is the best in the series, and something that any 3DS owner should try!

Yokai Watch is an underrated game series and I will preach that till the day I die. It has amazing story, unique gameplay features, and an even more unique set of befriendable creatures! Seriously, whenever I got into this series I was flowing with so much creativity to create some my own!

And this is honestly probably one of the only Japanese series that the English version actually does a fair job on. While some of the localized names are hit or miss, a lot of the dialogue between the English and Japanese is practically directly translated. This is especially prominent in the anime as well. I discovered the Japanese anime first, and ever since then I've been a big fan. One of my favorite little details about the game is that a lot of the Yokai designs are more influenced by their Japanese names, which a lot of them are puns or play on words.

I remember being in this fandom and it was pretty painful. Two thing that I learned is extreme patience and the Pokemon fanbase can be jerks sometimes. PTSD flashback to people spamming "Pokemon Rip-off" in the comment sections

I love yokai watch, and its sad to see that yokai watch 4 (and probably future ones) won't get localised. Let's hope Level 5 keeps this series going regardless

I know this is my third comment on this video but still I just really cannot hide how much I love this series. Jibanyan had his story put out in the video game, which is really nice. In the anime, several other Yokai had their backstories revealed, which aren't exactly touched upon in the games, but it gives you a better appreciation for some of those Yokai.

One of the ones that actually made me cry upon first watching is the story of Hungramps (Himonji). You find him outside the convenience store, making several people hungry and go inside to buy something to eat. This is reflected in the anime as well, but there is a reason why he's doing this. He is the Yokai Spirit of an old man who passed away without seeing his favorite granddaughter, and they would often go to the convenience store together when she was younger. He stayed outside the convenience store, and inspirited everyone that walked by with the hopes that he will see her again.

if that doesn't all get your heart strings I don't know what will. And this is honestly just one example of the backstories that they give some Yokai. it's touches like these that make me appreciate this series more

I totally agree the first game is so underrated! It just has a certain charm to it! Honestly though the future of yo kai watch dosen't look good sadly.The fourth game is the worst selling in the series and now level 5 is depending on income from the yo kai watch y academy spinoff. It's really sad to see level 5 and their games in such a bad state...I'm hoping Nintendo will buy them though as I don't think they will be around much longer.. :(

Yokai watch is has proved that it evolves faster and greater than pokemon. Even the first game surpasses pokemon in many ways from small conveniences to the main story and world and character design. Level 5 may be a small team but you can tell each staff member puts in so much more effort into their games than gamefreak. This is coming from a 10 year pokemon fan.

Tbh I dont even know why its called a ripoff its way more unique and harder than pokemon. There aren't things like pokeballs and literally everything in the game is determined by chance. Not only do they have unique typings such as tribes, every yokai has its own attributes aswell.
