I only knew Tom Waits from the "Saturday Night" album when I heard this song, which is the first on Blue Valentines, and I thought :
— Is it English ? (because of the way he sings "for us", I thought it was a strange alien language)
— There are two different people singing, but definitely not Tom Waits
I even came to think it was the wrong album ! His voice had changed so much, the way he plays with it, and well just about everything is different. This was when I realised he's an incredibly talented and unpredictable artist.

Afterglow brought me here, 8/17/22. I had never heard this arrangement or his voice before. It reminds me of Louis Armstrong, and then he shifts totally out of it and back and forth. lol
