His physical age has caught up to his voice.

It’s amazing how nice folks are to you when they know you are going away. - Tom Waits

Met a hippy kid outside a grocery store many years ago. He told me his uncle was Tom Waits and I told him he was full of shit. He pulled out a photo of them together at Thanksgiving dinner, and I was like

Tom saved my life. I used to leave the radio on while I slept, one night while I was fast asleep his song "On The Nickel" awakened me to a house that was burning the smoke would have killed me or the flames would've. His music always moved me and I was in a very dark time of my life my wife had left me and I missed my kids so very much. God bless him he's the real deal a true individual. I don't know where all that music comes from but it's got to be a special place. He sings for those who lost their way and whose lives are full of pain, he gets me deep down.

I picked up Tom Waits in my cab in Phila in 1976. He introduces himself and I mentioned that I had never heard of him. e told me that a lot of people didn't. We stopped at Days Deli on Spruce Street and asked me if i wanted anything. I said no and he bought a sandwich and took it with him to a friends house in Bala Cywyd. Later that year In June I was in London and noticed a sign on the Paladium Theater staying that Tom Waits was performing there the next week. Then I knew who he was! A great Guy! I never forgot it.

Waits has a killer, off-the-wall sense of humor, almost Carlin-esque. Could have been a stand up comedian, had the music thing not worked out!

Tom should host the oscars.
They would never do it. but He is more universally admired than many famous actors plus he is surprisingly funny.

Clooney's poise and restraint, along with Waits being Waits, make this hilarious

I once had a dream Tom Waits causally walked into my house, raided the fridge and made himself a sandwich.

"You can't retire from the tire business, it just sounds like you're signing yourself up for more time" -under rated joke

Clooney kept a solid expression until that "retire from the tire business" joke.

Tom Waits has written and performed some of the most profound and serious music I've ever listened to yet he never takes himself too seriously apparently. That's a balance achieved by a whole lotta life lived. And I'm not talking quantity.

he walked into our food shop 'kitchen' in nyc with his kid on his shoulders and ordered "some of that chicken off the bone" that i was de-boning for to stew some. we made him whatever he liked. and i swooned

That moment when Clooney thinks the joke is stupid then actually gets it and realizes it's hilarious...
