I used to car pool with 3 other guys travelling from Glasgow to Edinburgh everyday for work (1989 until 1993) and one guy Rob would play Tom Waits. For a good while i did not like his music and then one winter's evening sitting in the back of his car riding home with the heaters blowing and the frost outside I started getting cosy and a bit sleepy. Finally Tom's tunes started to work their way into my head. A switch was flipped and I've listened to his music ever since. Very grateful to Rob Paterson for introducing me to this wonderful musician and songwriter. Stay well Tom and keep writing and recording. The world needs you more than ever!

The title track, "Closing Time", was the only song recorded in full, and (producer Jerry)Yester later described the session as "the most magical session I've ever been involved with. At the end of it, no one spoke for what felt like five minutes, either in the booth or out in the room. No one budged. Nobody wanted the moment to end."

Cannot fathom how anyone in their early twenties could write a masterpiece like this - we played it at our wedding and my final wish is to have it played at my funeral - genius is understating this mans talents - paradise alley - Kentucky avenue - going out west - don't go into that barn - sixteen shells - Christmas card - shore leave - temptation - rain dogs - ETC ETC ETC and thank you Kathleen too for making this flower blossom

My 2021 resolution is to listen to WAY more of this guy.

Makes me tear up, or even sob sometimes. No other song truly captures the feeling of "goodbye", or "separation"", or "the end of an era, " or "moving on to the next phase of your life", or just "the end."

I don't think there is another song in existence that can transport me to other places quite like this one does.

there's something so special about music that just gets to you, I can't describe it

Increasingly my favourite songs are instrumentals. No needs for words. Just the music.

There is a sadness and yet hopefulness to this song. Ending things, accepting it and moving on, looking back with nostalgia. Goosebumps everytime!

I wrote a short story about Moby Dick‘s bar on Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, it was said that Tom Waits has been there. I wrote about my experiences and about the people inside and outside the bar. I would sit in a booth, facing the door, where I can see everybody and everything. My experience’s at Moby Dick‘s covers about seven years starting in 1971. My friends and some of my acquaintances have left an impression on me at Moby’s. My friends, who have shared my experiences there have passed away. Some years ago Moby Dick‘s was torn down with the rest of the block and its rubble lays somewhere in a landfill but the memories are still with me. This song sums it all up. Moby Dick’s, a “whale of a drink”

It's the mid 1970's and after a late Saturday night party in someone's smoky flat we're all hanging around worse for wear and wondering whether it's worth trying to catch some sleep and then this comes on...

Tom and emotion often go hand in hand. I love what he captures.

Son yolculuğuma uğurlanırken çalınmasını istediğim harika bir parça. Teşekkürler Tom Waits bize böyle tarif edilemez duygular yaşattığın için.

Pure genius. Does anyone remember that show Fishing With John? Tom and a few other geniuses go fishing with John Lurie. Absolute gold.

This song moves me to tears. Nothing encapsulates the end of an old chapter in life and the start of a new one quite like this.
I just turned 22 yesterday and I accomplished most of my goals that I set out for myself last year. It's good to reflect and this song helps me look on the past with a sense of optimism for the future.

You have to born with this talent - it's something anyone else can teach you - and that goes for all the best of the best.
