New Guitar Tutorials every Monday, subscribe and learn

Today we are going to learn how to take our rhythm playing to the next level. Once you've been playing guitar for awhile and you are starting to feel like you are more advanced you immediately jump into lead, scales, riffs, an soloing. Of course, tis is the logical next step and it is a ton of fun todo, but in doing so you don't give your rhythm playing the attention deserves, so while your lead playing starts to progress into intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced playing, your rhythm is still back at the beginner cowboy chord phase, and truth be told, playing rhythm is what you are going to be doing 95% of the time, you might be able to play every Metallica solo but if you can't bring unique flavor and groove to a basic chord progression all while staying in time and playing all over the fretboard, it doesn't matter how well you solo, you aren't going to get the job.

Rhythm deserves your attention, a lot of your attention. Your band deserves a rhythm player that understands the value of quality rhythm chops. Everybody loves Angus Young, but AC/DC doesn't go anywhere without Malcom. I am going to walk you through a basic cowboy progression in the key of A, then I am going to show you how to modify it. The modifcation process will walk you through how I found the chord shapes, how to move chord shapes, how to use pieces of a chord, and how the minor chord can add the b7th and 9th intervals to give the chord flare, dynamics and movement.
