Dude you're my hero! I read a dozen articles and none actually helped me out. This is the only one that helped me. Thanks a lot.
Note for those for whom the first step fails: The first terminal command didn't do anything for me as no packages were available in the first place on my system. I just proceeded to the second step starting from "Insert Guest Additions CD image" onward.

At last someone knowledgeable who knows what they're doing. After watching several clueless videos on the topic, this is refreshing. Thanks.

Great job ! although I (the system) had forgot to install the guest editions in the first place... why I don't know, but after making sure by uninstalling using your lead then, reboot, and simply reinstalling from the menu... it works now with 3D-rendering :-)
Thanks also for the other tips... they are great too !

Didn't work so I uninstalled the guest additions, but the terminal said they weren't installed. I reinstalled and restarted, but again, it's running in software rendering mode. I tried uninstalling, but they're still not installed.

I have this problem with Mint 19.1. Nothing that starts out with "virtualbox" is installed. I have installed and built the latest guest additions FROM the virtualbox installer. They appear to build and install just fine, but I always get the "Running in software rendering mode" error.

I wonder why it does it wrong when allowed to run right after mounting the disc. All you are really doing is running ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run from the terminal. Shouldn't it just run that to begin with?

A quick update as this is probably driving others crazy as well: Oracle just released The VboxLinuxAdditions.run in there will NOT work with VB 5.2 Mint 18.2 Cinnamon. Used VboxLinuxAdditions.run out of VBoxGuestAdditions_5.1.30.iso and it will work fair. Edited mint.vbox ...your 'VirtualMachineName'.vbox and bumped vram to 256MB, the 'real' VB limit to get a little more minty pep. Now to scrape off that gaudy then dump the bloat-crap and and compare heads up with Ubuntu 17.10 for sandbox web development performance.

Anyone has noticed that the background displays wrong color (becoming brighter than normally) after rebooting ?

If you are using Virtualbox 5.2.0 r 118431 with Mint 18.2 Cinnamon this will NOT work. The VboxGuestAdditions.iso that ships with VB is crap. Tried using VboxLinuxAdditions.run out of that is supposed to be the fix. This is pure ass as well. Limited success with older VboxLinuxAdditions.run out of Also tried delete/rename VboxGuestAdditions.iso out of Oracle/VirtualBox and then apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms after removing the installed mint flavored tard. No luck with this either. Tried everything short of crazy glue to skin this cat. Solutions may be limited to Mate 18.2 on VB 5.2.0 or mint Cinnamon 18.2 on older VB.

Installed Ubuntu 17.10 on VB 5.2 and it works first time, just fine. Really wanted to give Mint 18.2 Cinnamon a fair chance, but after close to a dozen failed builds trying to crack the rendering mode problem and a working Ubuntu 17.10 it is time to move on.
