My tips:

For new players, I suggest playing a simple fast-growth dinosaur like Dryo or Troodon. They reach adulthood quick and are excellent to learn the mechanics with. They are fast and allow you explore the island and their small stature allows you to hide easily. If you die it's no big deal, not much investment lost.

Herbivores can graze on grass. It doesn't go above 20% HP, but it prevents you from starving. Starvation is not an issue for herbivores.

Broadcasting (1) makes your dino heard by others. It covers a pretty large radius. Use it to find a herd/pack if others broadcast back. But be careful, carnivores can hunt you down. If you spam broadcast it makes others easy to pinpoint and find you.

Friendly (2) to show another dinosaur you have good intentions and mean no harm. Hold 2 to form groups. You can chat with eachother. You can only talk with dinos of the same species as you.

Threaten (3) to tell someone to back off, it signifies hostile intentions. Usually a fight ensues. Use it to contest a carcass for example. You're telling him to go away, this is your food, if he also calls 3 that means there's gonna be a fight.

Scared (4) is self-explanatory. Use it when getting chased, or you don't want to fight, or your friend got killed, or you got startled by an ambush, etc.

as a note to beginners watching this, only some dinos can jump or crouch! if you're trying to jump/crouch and you can't, it may just be your dino :]
