Actually it is a lot easier to make a self piloting plane than an automated car because a car always has to be aware of its surroundings and the rules of the road are much more complex than air travel. Also, pilots already have been using automatic systems to help them fly the plane with less work

fun fact: the technology to actually fly and land the planes automatically exists already, there are emergency autoland systems that are certified for use. The things we're missing (and arguably some of the more important problems) are communications (talking to ATC), taxiing (on the ground), and taking off.

People do realize its easier to make ai plane than car right. Theres no traffic, no rules, no idiot who somehow got their license on a road, no traffic light. Not to mentioned there's statically less accident from plane than car

I think everyone is forgetting that we pretty much already have self-driving planes. Every single plane these days has autopilot, which is pretty much high-level cruise control. If we can go from cruise control to self driving cars, we can do the same with planes.

Fun fact: all modern passanger planes have autopilot, so when u are on a plane, it's probably not the pilot flying, but the AI, the pilot is only there to take of, land, talk to controll, and to make passengers comfortable by making an illusion
