Uh, combined speeds would be an impact at something in the tens of thousands mph.
There is no "shelter" for that.

If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a blown up satellite

According to Neil DeGrasse Tyson, the plot of the movie Gravity is actually realistic. You could easily have a runaway cascade scenario of satellite debris crashing into each other, taking out one after another, including the Space Station itself. What were they thinking?! All that risk just to test a friggin' anti-satellite space missile? C'mon.

This the reason you don't blow up satellites

I usually don't have a problem with other countries, we all live on the same planet...but what were they thinking??

As more space debris begins to orbit our planet at increasingly faster speeds, we are unwittingly defending ourselves against alien invasion. We've created a primitive, yet effective force field.

In service with the United States is the ship-based missile defense system Aegis. The RIM-161 Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) rocket, which is part of it, has the ability to hit satellites, which was demonstrated in practice on February 21, 2008, when the SM-3 rocket successfully hit the US military satellite USA-193, which went off-design low orbit

HMMM I have too wonder since Russia has started their own space station! Could this be an attempt to take out the international space station?
