A few months ago, I was getting frustrated with the "block in all the big shapes and then do the details" approach because it just... doesn't work for me. Every other tutorial insisted that you MUST do it that way or your values will be all wrong and planes will fall out of the sky and whatever. But all it did was aggravate me.

So I tried this approach with a busy farmer's market scene, and OMG... it really is a game changer. I'm so much happier working on small components, finishing them, then moving on to the next than I was with blocking in. I think for me, I just got really frustrated with the "ugly stage", especially on larger paintings. It was overwhelming. Working on smaller pieces just works so, so much better for me. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!

I have come to the conclusion that I now use acrylic as my under painting and top off with oils. This technique makes the painting come to life. After I do my acrylic I varnish, then with the oils on top. The varnish brings the acrylics back to their "wet" look.

So good! It's refreshing to see other artists struggle and then finding a solution. Thnx for sharing this!

I've painted in oils for the UK's biggest art publisher for near 20 years and I routinely have my oils dry overnight without Liquin etc. Colour choice is key. I use Michael Harding fast dry titanium white, prussian blue, earth colours are mostly fast drying, Michael Harding cadmium yellows and reds (both very opaque), quinacridone rose, magenta, pthalo green. Mostly all Michael Harding, good quality gives best coverage (I paint in one layer always) plus drying speeds are written on the tubes. I paint 15 hours a day, 7 days a week and absolutely have to be able to carry on the next morning on a dried painting. Never understood why people avoid oils thinking that they take a long time to dry. 🙂

I really love the way you think and communicate. The fact that it's about art is fantastic but regardless of subject, it's a win! ❤

I paint oil, and I paint acrylic. I’ve watched others do it and thought “hmmm, I should try that”. Like you, I find the drying time of oils can be an issue sometimes.
You’ve convinced me to give it a try 😊
Beautiful job!

Great job mate. Oil takes time to finish but is better I think.

Beautiful composition. Shame we did not get a look at the reference you worked from. See how close it was. I suspect it would be very accurate.

Awesome, I'm an oil painter and this is similar to the method I use, acrylic undertone/underpainting then oil on the top. Lol it does take forever to paint in small sections vs one continual layer like acrylic, but the results are always wonderful! I've tried painting in layers with oil, it kind of works with fast drying colors. And here I was thinking my method needed to be changed; talk about a confidence boost😁💕!
