You know your franchise has gone off the rails when the possibility of an “but in space” sequel becomes less of a joke and more of a looming threat

It's kind of a shame that this sort of storytelling rubbed off on a lot of those other "indie horror" creators, who realized that it gathered publicity through baiting theory channels into talking about their games. When, in reality, it doesn't excuse the fact that a lot of these stories can just be summed up as messy and sloppily thrown together. But don't worry, if MatPat gets on it, you're laughing all the way to the bank.

I think FNAF 1 - UCN was where it's at, sure, the lore was confusing and quite complicated to figure out, but it genuinely seemed like Scott was trying to build a story there, and most things had a decently plausible explanation. Ending it with Afton being in his own hell for all eternity while everyone else is free just sounds right...and then they made Afton a virus.

the pros of fnaf lore: its open to interpretation
the cons of fnaf lore: its wayyy open to interpretation

They leaned too heavily on the "silly animatronics" thing, and too far away from the horror element of the story. The horror was still there, but took a backseat.

The line between mysterious and nonsensical storytelling can sometimes be hard to pin down. But as someone who has hyperfixated over FNAF lore for 8 years I can freely say you are correct.

FNAF's story is not this deep, sacred flawless thing it has just as many faults as any other man made fiction. This doesn't make me hate the story if anything it makes it more approachable. But the story kinda peaked at FNAF 3 imo.

FINALLY, SOMEONE SAID THIS!, i am sick of the fans trying to craft scott story for him, I know he said that he wants the games to be mysterious but for the stakes of the story and plot to work some elements have to be explained and revealed, you can't just be mysterious for the sake of being mysterious.

What bothers me the most about the new lore is how little it makes sense for Fazbear's Pizza to be so big. In FNAF 1 it was very clear that the franchise was a shell of its former self, pretty much ruined by the murder of the kids. The animatronics are cheap and nasty, customers are complaining, and there are rumors about the restaurant being connected to the missing children incident. It's literally a relic by the time of FNAF 3, and is literally out of business. It makes no sense for the brand to suddenly be international and so popular, that a ginormous entertainment center could be dedicated to it, and be profitable. It's like the writers forgot the brand is only popular in real life, not in lore.

Personally, I think FNaF's story peaked at FNaF 3.

1. The story focused more on the *children* (the characters you actually interact with).

2. The Bite of '87 isn't overshadowed (and made redundant) by the Bite of '83.

3. The story had a solid ending, entailing the children being put to rest after the demise of their killer.

4. The absence of Sci-Fi makes the narrative more eerie as it is grounded in reality more.

5. The story balanced solid information and ambiguity (allowing the player to use their imagination in some parts, making personal horror a key component to each person's playthrough).

6. It is extremely coherent compared to the modern version.

Man, i would have been completely ok with a batshit story if the story had the balls to do new things, and also not drag an amazing villain from the grave whenever it needed to.

Seriously, William Afton has been turned into a episode of the week style villain while also being overused, it's just sad.

I think the main thing I hate about FNAF is how much it relies on assuming
- We ASSUME that Funtime robots are haunted by dead kids, not just sentient.
- We ASSUME Mike was the night guard in the other games.
- We ASSUME Henry (The other robot maker) now haunts the Blob in SB.
- We ASSUME Afton's corpse is separate from his Ghost (Which is fucking stupid)
This is why I love FNAF VHS so much more.
- SL doesn't exist
- William is just a monster, not some evil scientist trying to live forever, just a cruel father.
- There's a focus on the ghosts and animatronics.
- When Afton dies, he rots in hell. No "I COME BACK!" Bullshit.

I've been saying this for the past year, but... one, singular "correct" fnaf timeline is physically impossible. With how Scott haphazardly laid out story elements, sometimes going back on them, sometimes forgetting previous elements he made, sometimes creating two different elements that conflict with each other, and sometimes re-contextualizing small unimportant details from the previous games into big deals, its just not possible for one timeline to be chronologically correct and make actual sense on a storytelling basis. Just one example, there are THREE different characters within various points on the timeline that all share the name Jeremy. Another example, you'll see that most timeline explanation videos can't give a proper reason as to why William starts killing kids, because their interpretation of the timeline places William's character motivation AFTER his killing spree begins (with good reason, though). And yes, there's the wacky, off-the-walls parts of this franchise that just completely leave us speechless. This is a great video that highlights the entire fandom's issues with the lore of this franchise. Really well-made video with funny jokes and great editing. Hope your channel grows more from this point.

There is three things humanity don’t fully understand yet:

- Love
- Death
- FNAF Lore

I have a nagging feeling that Scott didn't even intend for the series to have lore, but then MatPat came onto the scene and crashed that dream.

Opinion on FNAF 3 incoming:
I’m pretty sure Scott meant for the monitors to be hard to make sense of, as you’re only handling a singular animatronic. Personally, I think it works really well in adding panic when losing track of Springtrap.

The problem with SB is that the game was censored AS HELL to not be M17.
That's why we have Freddy saying "you're broken" instead of "you're injured" and that's why Vanny the main antagonist and focus of the game was sidelined to another random antagonist that stalks you for some minutes before you progress in the real story.
Like. All of her voice lines don't make 20 seconds worth of dialogue. Most of her characterization was completely REMOVED idk, to not make the *horror* game creepy.

Ever since Security Breach came out, I've been keen on thinking that Fnaf needs to just end. Yes, the story is weird and confusing at times, but it always has you wanting to learn more. Now, Security Breach showed us that the developers are too afraid to branch off and try a new story, so they find random ways to bring past characters back. William used a woman that he's mind controlling to break a bunny to create a new body which somehow just looks like his Springtrap body. Michael apparently survived the fire and somehow found himself possessing the Freddy bot. Guess the crying child from Fnaf4 is now back as a robot! (I don't believe this theory because it's incredibly dumb.)

Security breach might be one of the most poorly written games ever

Yeah Scott was 100% making shit up as he went along.

Fnaf 1: You're a nightguard with animatronics trying to kill you. Some guy murdered 5 kids and stuffed them in the suits, they're probably haunted.

Fnaf 2: You're a nightguard with animatronics trying to kill you. The killer is purple, there's a puppet who brought spirits to life with animatronic bodies. The game is a prequel, Bite of 87 goes unmentioned so its probably unimportant.

Fnaf 3: We're in the future, Purple Guy is trapped in an animatronic suit, place burns down.

Fnaf 4: Kid got bit by Fredbear, the year is 1983. The game is him having nightmares in a hospital.

Sister Location: About the same time as Fnaf 4, there's an underground bunker of animatronics trying to kill ya, there's one especially nasty dude named Ennard who wants to wear your skin. Purple guy is named William Afton.

Pizzeria Simulator: You buy a building and burn it to the ground, latest in the timeline.

Ultimate Custom Night: William Afton goes to hell.

Help Wanted: William Afton is either a ghost or a virus and he's infected this VR game and is trying to take over your body.

Security Breach: You're a kid in a mall, William Afton is back somehow and he has an evil accomplice now.

So put this altogether and the simplest possible version of the Fnaf lore becomes:

William Afton and Henry own Fredbear's family diner. In 1983 William's kid gets bitten and dies in the hospital, meanwhile at the same time some guy, usually considered Michael Afton, gets himself scooped and revived becoming a purple guy (there's two by the way.) Sometime between 1983 and 1987 William murders a girl commonly referred to as Charlie in 1987, five kids are murdered at Freddy Fazbear's pizza, William did it, the place closes down. In the 90's the same thing basically happens, five kids die, William did it, moving on. Fnaf 3 comes along, William's dying in a rabbit suit, the place burns down, he survives and goes on to kill some more. Then in Pizzeria Simulator, he comes back, along with some Sister Location characters and the puppet, also possibly Michael, and Henry burns the place down. Afton somehow isn't completely dead, and comes back as a ghost/virus in Help Wanted, recruiting/brainwashing this girl Vanessa to be his protege. In Security Breach Vanessa brings William back, only for one or both of them to die.

And depending on what you consider canon, William may have gone to hell for a little while.

The generally accepted lore we have now is probably mostly Matpat's doing. I'm serious, Matpat wrote most of Fnaf's lore, not Scott.
