I can't help but feel that Shona was supposed to be the new companion until Jenna Coleman changed her mind and decided to stay on the show a bit longer. I heard that they had to rewrite the first few episodes of next season because Jenna changed her mind, it also explains why the ending seemed so tacked on, does anyone else thing the episode was originally supposed to end with the Doctor spending the last Christmas with old Clara?

This is probably one of the best Christmas Specials I've seen so far. They mastered the concept of false awakening. Anyone else's excited that Clara's staying on-board? She is definitely the best companion.

Didn't anyone else notice two huge things here?
1. The Doctor woke up at the Volcano in Dark Water? You mean the one that didn't exist as it was a dream state and Clara was there with him when it happened? I think he was somewhere before Danny died (just theorizing).
2. Who's Dave? Kind of a weird detail to leave unexplained, I don't think we've seen the end of Shona.

I finally got to see this on the New Year's Eve marathon. Of course I missed just about every single Easter egg because I'd never seen any of the referenced shows or movies, but they clearly did what an Easter egg is supposed to do: entertain those who get it and stay invisible to those who don't.

And since you recorded this, Jenna's announced that she's staying on through the whole of Series 9. Of course that doesn't mean that there won't still be a new companion, and I totally agree with you that Shona would be a wonderful one.

Nick Frost's Santa Claus was, of course, a dream construct and not real at all (assuming, of course, that the tangerine was just a tangerine). Equally "of course, " that doesn't mean that we won't see Santa Claus for real at some point in the future, whether it's next Christmas or twenty years from now.

For myself, I think it would be awesome, if the show's still on at that time, to have the Doctor actually visit Clara for the 2078 Christmas special.

Seriously, the episode was OKAY, but the ending sort of made me die inside. I HATE CLARA, AND I'M PISSED THAT SHE'S BACK FOR SERIES 9. What I was hoping for, was that Clara would be in her 'dream world' with Danny, and she realized that she would rather live with Danny in a fake universe and end up getting killed rather than surviving and living normally without the Doctor. So she would 'die', living with Danny in happiness. That would have been PERFECT, but no. Moffat has to drag out the most hated companion in NewWho history. Okay, moving on. When I saw the old version of Clara, I was hoping that she would say something like 'I think I've had enough adventure for one lifetime' and lived in peace in wherever it was she was living. But no, Moffat has to seriously complicate it. There were like 7 dreams within a dream! Ever since Moffat has come on board, the show has REALLY lost the magic it had back when Eccleston and Tennant were Doctors. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Capaldi, he is probably my favorite Doctor, but he is being handled so badly... God, Series 9 better be an improvement...

Doctor Who's Santa is a Dream Lord. Dream Lords are like Time Lords, but possibly extra dimensional beings.

Dream Lords are like Orz from Star control but with a better grip on themselves when it comes down to interaction between a Dream Lord and some organic being like humans.

David Troughton also played the 2nd Doctor in an Audio Go (The Hexford Invasion, Survivors in Space) story featuring Tom Baker as the 4th doctor. It was the two-part wrap up to the 3 series run. He was spot on, right down to the "Crumbs" and "Oh my giddy aunts."

Great review of the episode but 1 note, the line was Very, Very, Very, Dead, not Good...other then that great work dude :)

This year's Christmas Special was outstanding (they all have be honestly with Moffat's being my favorite out of the two showrunners), I loved the nice emotional rollercoaster ride you got when the 'old' Clara was revealed then Santa shows back up (again), good TV.
