Microsoft has released many versions of their Windows PC operating system over the years, with most featuring their own unique startup and shutdown sounds. This video showcases every chime used in the most popular Microsoft Windows releases starting with Windows 1.0 in 1985 and ending with Windows 10 in 2015.

Most people would say Windows XP has the best starting sound but for me personally the Windows 95 startup sound is way more nostalgic and will always have a place in my heart

Sonically, the Windows 95 and OG Playstation startups really were indicative of the start of a new era in tech. Those sound designers really knocked it out of the park. 👌🏼

I was born in 1989. XP and Vista will be forever remind me if my child hood and teen age years. It shaped my thinking and feelings on a blank slate. Today… I’ve realized how destructive and wonderful tech can be.

Amazing. Hearing the Windows 2000 (ME), XP and Vista sounds, I vividly recall the excitement I felt when I upgraded to each of them. Back then, installing a new OS felt much like getting your hands on shiny new tech. Those were some fun times.

As a Windows user myself, I want to make a few corrections:
1. There were no startup or shutdown sounds before Windows 3.1
2. Windows 2000 used the same startup and shutdown sound as Windows ME. The startup sound for Windows 2000 shown here is the one used in the Beta.
3. All builds of Longhorn used XP sounds until Vista RTM.
4. Windows 8 and Windows 10 do not have their own startup sounds. You can enable a startup sound through the control panel. The sound that can be enabled is the Windows Vista/7 startup sound.
