2013 Toyota RAV4 vs 2014 Mazda CX-5 - Track Comparison

Several months ago, AutoGuide set a Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 side-by-side. As you might remember, Mazda won.

It wasn't long before Toyota launched a letter our way expressing discontent with the result. And rightfully so. The previous verdict came, in part, because the all-wheel drive CX-5 scored more points in driving dynamics than the front-wheel drive RAV4 Toyota lent us for the shootout. Insisting on a rematch, the brand brought AutoGuide a more comparable model equipped with all-wheel drive.

This time around, the two are not only competing on a more level playing field, but the RAV4 actually has an ace up its proverbial sleeve, sporting a more sophisticated all-wheel drive system.

2021 Comment: Mazda CX-5 has aged fantastically well. Still looks 2016-2017 ish

Impressed with the CX5; would be inclined to choose this over the Rav4 4

I researched for months and read all reviews on the best compact SUVs and tested both CX5 and RAV4. We really wanted to like the CX5 better because of its gas mileage and high ratings but love the way the RAV4 looks inside and out. I am happy with the way it drives. We ended up choosing the AWD RAV4 and so far, couldn't be happier. I was pleasantly surprised to find out the back seats in the RAV recline and there is a lot of head and leg room in front and back seats.

Great video.. I was torn between a 2014 CX-5 & 2013 Rav4. I ended up going with the Rav mainly because of resale and interior comfort and looks. It's true that, especially on the Limited trim, the ride is rough and I cringe when I drive over even a minor pothole. Now, if I could afford an X3 this would be a different conversation!

I like the exterior of the CX-5 but I like the interior of the RAV4

I don't get why people think it's SO absurd to test a CUV on a track. How else are you going to test it?  Would you test a Mazda 6 on the track? Yes?  Well they both have the same engines available and get this - a weight difference of only 11 lbs.
Mazda 6: 3183 lbs / 111.4" wheelbase
Mazda CX-5: 3194 lbs / 106.3" wheelbase
Yes of course I realize a CUV is taller and has a higher suspension setup, but we're not talking about some truck here. This is basically a raised hatchback.

And the Escape was also recalled 3 times in its first year, one of them catching fire while driving

I like the front of the Toyota, but I like the rear of the Mazda... And the interior of the CR-V.

Buy Rav4 for reliability and comfort. CX-5 for driving dynamics and better MPG.

No way I could invest 30k on Mazda. Toyota makes a more reliable and quality vehicle. This test isn't going to target the demographic for either vehicle.

My wife and I are going to buy the rav4 because of the overall dependability, reliability, and resale value. Happy that Mazda is making some headway in the US but I don't trust their small dealer network or their long term dependability rating.

thats probably an exception
Ford came in at the bottom last year on overall reliability according to Consumer Reports, Toyota group and Mazda ranked 1, 2 respectively
statistics speak for themselves

You can well replace the two reviewers with 2 speaking robots.

I actually like both of these cars. If I were to buy one, it would be the Toyota due to its excellent engine and transmission.  It is a proven product.  The Mazda may be good also, but I would wait until it has been around a couple of years like the Toyota's drive-train.

Hey guys, it's so funny when you compare vehicles like this and complain about things that are your own personal taste. Why don't you compare reliability through quality history? When a consumer buys a vehicle, it better start everyday and keep going as long as possible. All the electronic gadgets, fancy interior, correctly placed buttons will not replace quality!

Also, I'm going from an Impreza that was great in the snow to this Rav4... I hope it will be as good in the snow!

The Toyota looks ugly as hell compared to the CX-5. To me, looks mean a lot and therefore the Mazda is easily the one I'd pick.

The Mazda is still the better choice, and Toyota is the "mainstream" choice.
