The Punjab government, under CM Bhagwant Mann, has decided to increase the value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to reduce the state's debt burden and boost its finances. The VAT on petrol has been raised by 61 paise per litre, and on diesel by 92 paise per litre. Additionally, the government has cut the subsidised power tariff for domestic consumers by Rs 3, reversing a subsidy provided by the previous Congress administration. As a result, petrol in Mohali is now priced at Rs 97.01 per litre, and diesel at Rs 87.21 per litre, both higher than in Chandigarh.
