If my remember my ancient lore correctly, the fact sentient minds could meld or be sustained by the sarlac led to several different kinds of interesting developments. Often Sarlacs would torture the minds of their digested victims for entertainment, but on occasion the sarlac would be a kind soul and provide for its victims a pleasant mindscape to exist during and after their absorption. In situations like this sarlacs were known to carry on long conversations with their occupants and were found to be very curious and even philosophical. Sometimes the sarlac would develop what you could basically call a wholesome relationship with its food and make an effort to preserve their individuality to some degree. If a kind sarlac ate enough good people it could sometimes over eons become a strange force for good in its own right and occasionally even achieve great things or assist others trying to do the same. The Jedi did not fear the sarlac, but revered it as the embodiment of patience.
