Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Thursday refrained from answering whether he thought President Donald Trump was fit to be commander in chief of the United States. In an interview with PBS NewsHour anchor and managing editor Judy Woodruff, Mattis said that he does not “make political assessments one way or the other.” The former defense secretary resigned his post at the end of last year. “I come from the Defense Department,” Mattis told Woodruff, “we don't make assessments of the people's choice to serve as the elected commander in chief.”
