The funniest part about all this is that Dan had bought all the expensive gear.

I highly agree with all of this except as a paramedic, never cheap on a good first aid, a trauma kit will be much more situationally effective

Ill take that metal spoon all day long. Broken to many plastic ones. As for the fire starters I take lint and put in an egg carton then dump melted wax over.

You don't need a Helinox. Just find some spiders and have them spin that chair for you for FREE! (ok, maybe it'll cost a cricket)

Some of the stuff is just more reusable and reliable though.

This is so true. Literally just problem solving and finding cheap solutions to problems is half the fun

I’d be okay with cheaping out on some of those items, but not the medical supplies.
Edit: for fucks sake, why yall gotta turn this comment section in to Ukraine 2.0, you have your own preferences, I get it, now stop fucking trying to give me a lecture and force your opinions on me.

As a wilderness guide, I can say it's amazing the difference in gear from guides to clients. Guests will go our of their way and buy all the super high tech gear and $100 shirts designed for outdoors. Meanwhile guides are using mid tear equipment and clothes we get from the thrift store. The only exception I'd say would be safety and medical gear. That stuff is top notch

I do like having a full med kit though.(I have the training to use it so at least I can make use of it)

The only thing that you never skimp out on is a good tourniquet and medical supplies.

Because getting out is better than staying at home waiting to asemble the perfect setup

The one thing I've been buying are bags... And then I fill them with what I need... Sometimes it's an extra set of clothes if I'm visiting family. And sometimes it's full on bug out and tough it out camping gear! Other than some EDC that should be always in your vehicle. Maybe have some emergency gear in a bug out/emergency plastic tote.

I just bought my Dyneema union suit (with optional hood). Taking it on my first trip this weekend with a polycro quilt in one cargo pocket, hard tack in the other and smart water bottles in the arm pockets. 100% worn weight!

Fun Fact: the Waterproof bag with fibers called Dyneema.these 'Special' Dyneema Fibers are basically nylon Fibers. Making it sound cool they can ask a higher price

Totally! Although as a ski patrol and backcountry snowboarder I would 100% recommend a light trauma kit and some sort of splint even if it’s just the stays from your pack. You never know what’s gonna happen

That spoon is one of the most helpful utensils I own. Worth it. No your malt spoon can't stir a freeze dried meal with boiling water

Use your dryer lint instead of cotton balls for the combustible part your fire starter. You’ll save even more money!
