BYJU'S, an edtech firm, has denied a media report that it was considering shutting down White Hat Jr., an edtech coding startup it acquired in 2020.
According to TechCrunch, BYJU'S had been looking to close White Hat Jr. in order to cut costs and eliminate the business division that drew significant criticism from the Bengaluru-based company.
"We have no plans to close White Hat Jr. "We are simply optimizing it for organic and efficient growth," a BYJU spokesperson told through emails.
"At the group level, in accordance with its steadfast commitment towards achieving operational profitability, BYJU'S is constantly evaluating and optimizing its business operations towards global growth.
BYJU'S previously announced a $300 million acquisition of White Hat Jr. in 2020. According to TechCrunch, it eventually spent less than $235 million on the transaction.
BYJU'S is slashing prices dramatically. Until recently, the company—which has reduced its marketing spending and laid off thousands of employees—was spending around $14 million per month on its coding platform, according to the report.
WhiteHat Jr laid off approximately 300 employees in June as part of a cost-cutting measure. WhiteHat Jr has been chastised for making false claims and employing pushy tactics when courting students. The coding platform received even more flak after suing several of its critics. It eventually dropped the lawsuit.
While the company is still figuring out the go-to-market strategy for WhiteHat Jr, said Byju Raveendran, Founder and CEO of BYJU'S, the company's other major acquisitions have been profitable.
The edtech firm has recently come under fire for questionable accounting practices and significant downsizing. YourStory reported earlier this month that BYJU'S cut over 900 more jobs across teams in a new round of layoffs.
The startup, which was last valued at $22 billion, reported a loss of Rs 4,564.38 crore in FY21, which was higher than its loss of Rs 305.5 crore in FY20.
