Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori (the composers for the original vision of this game series) were excellent composers in their own right - most of the instrumentation for the first game wasn't live, and were samples. They just didn't have the budget - gaming wasn't big, and the company they worked for, Bungie, wasn't a big gaming studio. That this theme was composed as well as it was, and to fit the game it was made for, was a miracle unto itself. With Halo 2 and onward they had no problem acquiring more live talent for the compositions. The second game, Halo 2, still prominently featured digitized or sampled tracks - but many more instruments and general ambient and aura sounds were recorded specifically for the game. The third game in the series (and onward) featured live recordings prominently - taking responsibility on the recording of most of the character themes, and some key pieces during gameplay. Each of the games were designed with the sound in mind. O'Donnell in particular was chiefly responsible for how the different acts of the movements correspond to things happening in the game.
They used to, as a gaming company, actually document their development- you could hear them directly talk about the audio department in each game, and its development. (If you weren't aware before, game development is essentially artistic hell.) The developers had many tribulations on their way to releasing each title, getting better every step of the way. That the first game could produce such a well-crafted composition under such immense pressure is nothing short of amazing!

P.S. They did indeed work with Steve Vai for Halo 2, but I was unaware of Mr. Misha Mishnoor of Periphery also working with the series of games until the comments on this video! Very cool!

"if periphery covered this"
It's funny you should mention this. When recording the soundtrack for the remastered release of Halo 2 Misha Mansoor of periphery joined in for a remaster of Steve Vai's theme, as well as creating a whole new track for the game.

It is not physically possible for me to be more fanboyish about this video than what I am right now. Damn, Geebz. This goes right to the soul. Thank you.

Ok... if we're doing game themes now no one can leave out DOOM and DOOM Eternal soundtracks... Mick Gordon being the main composer for the most part.

Steve Vai did the guitar work for this music in Halo 2 so you can hear that chug that you are talking about. He worked directly with Marty O'Donnell who was the driving force behind the music. Also shout out to Michael Salvatori who also worked on this music.

Halo was one of the biggest games to ever bring my brother, his friends, my friends, and myself together when it came out. One of the most influential games I have ever played, even if I stopped playing a long time ago for others.

These are actually all real instruments and vocalist performances, sure it's edited and mixed in post but these are all indeed real orchestral elements \m/

Alright. "Mick Gordon: The Only Thing They Fear Is You" from the Game "Doom Eternal" is next..

One of the fun things about the melody is that the composer, Marty O'Donnell, threw it all together in less than a day, because the demo of the game was going to be shown off at an apple expo and they needed a theme for it ten minutes ago. The theme he slapdashed together ended up being so memorable, it became part of the game's, and later the franchise's, dna, and here we are 20 years later, still getting that twinge in our chest when we hear that piano.

Halo was a huge part of my teenage years and this song is definitely on my soundtrack of life.

Many a night in the early 2000s my friends would gather into one friends house all weekend long while his mother worked night shifts so we had the whole house to ourselves. 14-15 year old boys, with a full fridge of food, soda, internet access, and video games with no adult supervision, no cares in the world and a whole life ahead of us with endless opportunities. Loads of laughs. Plenty of victorious moments; a few stinging losses. Amazing times. Many MANY standby bluescreens while the server looked for a new host because someone quit the game or someone was hitting the standby button on their router trying to cheat. Countless bombs armed and flags taken. A plethora of, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!" and numerous counts of, "get F*@&ed kid!! Owned!!". My friends and I kicked SO many rocks as Master Chief into the hole on Silent Cartographer in Halo CE that we could have probably have filled it up. "Alright, I think i'm done... why did you guys start another game? Oh S*#% it's Lockout! Okay, I'll play this one and i'm done!" - "Okay, good win. Now i'm.... Okay, after THIS one.... Oh duuuude it's one flag on Ivory Tower!!". Rinse and repeat for HOURS. "Wort wort wort".

*Gained the lead*

*Lost the lead*

*Tied the leader*

*Gained the lead*

*Lost the lead*

*Tied the leader*

*Lost the lead*

"Triple kil- KILL-TACULAR!!!"

*Gained the lead*

*Game over!* All within the waning moments of a match.

And who could forget the pleasant and ever-so-respectable post game lobbies that were completely articulate and inspired great moments of humanity and unity? Heh... Those were the days. Yeah, Halo is still around, and many of my friends still play, but it's somehow not the same anymore. We only have time for a handful of rounds a week before we have to get off and rest up before going back to work and live an adult life and pay bills. Ah well..

Obligatory Dark Souls 3 "Soul of Cinder" suggestion if we're still doing video game tracks. Also, well done Geebz.

I remember playing this game around the time it came our about 20 years ago and following Bungie through the game series with and even 343 when they took it over, but to this day when I hear the Halo theme it just brings me such a strong emotion and the chills from the memories of when I was growing up playing it. This is one of those songs that will bring me to the edge of tears with just sheer emotion.

I haven't watched this yet but I know it's going to be epic, and this is an amazing idea. This theme always gives me goosebumps. Throwback to my time in Iraq in '03-'04.
