When I mentioned alternate display modes, I was referring to some games having the ability to output 480p or higher, unlike the lower quality 480i. On a PlayStation 2 this can be done by holding ❌ and 🔼 when starting the game.

One other reason for that is also the fact that the composite actually was designed to warp on CRT TVs its one of the reasons some people prefer to get old CRTs for retro consoles.

But this actually seems like a pretty good alternative for direct plugin.

As a guy who oddly enough loves composite video, I approve of this short.

I got one for a wii with similar results. Best little thing I've ever bought.

You mentioned that the video signal looks like crap, but you were not observing the video signal, you were only looking at the video image. In order to observe the video signal we need to feed that signal into an oscilloscope.
Bad image quality can be due to poor signal fidelity or a loss of signal integrity in the transmission line, but it can also be because of improper image processing in the display device. So we can’t know whether the quality of the video signal is good or not simply by looking at the quality of the displayed image.

Remember however, some older games where expected to be played on old bulky smaller TVs.

When put through HDMI, a lot of things that game devs could hide becomes a lot more clear.

A nice stretched texture to save resources can easily go unnoticed on an old TV. But on an hd TV it can become very noticable.

Not saying don't play them on hd TVs. Cheaper and easier probably to connect one to an hd over a normal TV. And it isn't like this stuff will be game breaking or anything.

Just figured I'd mention. Personally I have a big pet peeve over pop in and on hd tvs it can be more noticeable.

Just emulate the games on your PC. If it’s powerful enough, you might even get higher FPS.

Component2hdmi is the only way to go. A direct "ps2tohdmi" is horrible, they look worse than if i was to just natively use even a 3rd party composite cable. But component changes the game quite literally.

Would the graphics look even better if you used that HDMI graphics enhancement device that you reviewed a couple years ago?
