I'm not against video gaming but I'm finding my 8 year old doesn't know the appropriate times to play his video game. I put his handheld video game device up and allow him to play when I feel it's approriate timing for him to do so and only after he has completed his chores or any other tasks I need him to complete prior to zoning out in video game land.lol...He does have a TV in his room but we have always set a sleep timer since he was toddler. He now asks me how much tv time he can get, sets his own timer and returns the remote. A couple of times I found he had put it on longer than instructed. When I discovered he had set it for longer then instructed the TV was immediately turned off for the night. We don't have a problem with that any longer and I feel it's a great way for him to learn to self regulate TV time.

Hi!
Your points are valid and mostly correct but some long time side effects of what you’ve proposed do lead to a child who is more deceptive. This has been very common among many younger people. If you google “x family bypass” there are several which your child can exploit. Along with that, an craving of technology as a holy grail of enjoyment which can lead to the willingness of a child to do a if or when task to be met with more and more pushback over longer periods of time. Along with that I understand you are in context talking about a healthy family, but with many broken families technology is a very common coping mechanism. Limiting this can lead to depression and other mental health issues. Though your message is well intended and I do agree some points are flawed. I hope you don’t be taken aback but understand what side affects can entail.

Thank you very much for the insights.
I have my kids on the tickets system. If they want screen time I want tickets and they can earn the tickets via chores and odd tasks they can preform around and in the house. This works lovelly for us.

Thank you for your advices. I appreciate your efforts.
But how about a father that plays and plays with computer games more than his kids. 😔
I speak to him in case to help me with them and not to break the roles that i had put, he says ok, but return back to his old passion... computer.
What to do 😟

Hi there Dr. Paul Jenkins. What if my child doesn't want to stop playing games at my cellphone until the cellphone doesn't getting battery empty. She plays 3 hours at my cellphone and doesn't want to give my cellphone back until my cellphone gets battery empty. I feel like a failure and a bad parent because I can't discipline my child. She never listened and obeyed me.

When we married we decided that we werent going to have tvs or computers in the bedrooms. Our kids complain about it but they see we share the tv, we share time togethet. Now, hand held devices we struggle with... we considered the charging station in our room.
