Singaporean here. We actually agreed to join with Malaysia, but there were many racial riots with the Chinese and Malaysians in Singapore (about privileges and stuff because they were Malaysian). Only a few years after merging, Singapore and Malaysia decided to part ways, where the scene of Mr Lee Kwan Yew crying had happened. Singapore then became its own city and country and is amazing (aside from the humidity 😅)!! Hope this helped!

One thing to note is why Malaysia kicked Singapore out of the country was NOT because of the opium.... but because of communism. Back then, Malaysia feared the rise of Chinese Communism in the country, and back then, Singapore had the highest chinese population in the country. So, our founders decided to kick them out for a secure nation. Little did they know that backfired big time.

It also helps that their Population Growth Rate is decreasing, meaning in the future, they're will be fewer people with a large amount of GDP, thus making the new generation of Singaporeans will be a lot richer but still, they're many other factors that may play here but hey, I'm just saying the major one.

On 9 August 1965, Singapore separated from Malaysia to become an independent and sovereign state. The separation was the result of deep political and economic differences between the ruling parties of Singapore and Malaysia, which created communal tensions that resulted in racial riots in July and September 1964.soo malaysia did not say sikee

I'm from Singapore and I love how he summarises our boring and complex history into a fun, well animated short with fun commentary :)

I like how simplified yet untrue some of these sentences are.
To understand Singapore's History, Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles, and became a British Colony. It was a rather important trading hub, especially for the Brits. Of course, Malacca was also other important spot. Many traders from China, India, Britain and other European colonies came here and Malacca due to how flexible it was. Of course pirates existed but it was the safest route since the entire route was closest to land.
Fast forward to WW2, Europe was fighting the Nazis, and Britain was forced to bring back all its troops. This allowed the Japanese to invade Southeast Asia through the pearl harbor thing that they tot will be effective.
Then Japanese Surrended in 1945. During that time, the people had seen the horrors and felt that the Brits can no longer protect and colonise them. This was especially true as other big colonies like India were becoming independent. It took a while for the Brits to allow Singapore to move on ( since Singapore was really small compared to other nations, and cold war was happening they weren't sure if nations could become communist)
1962 is when we, North Borneo and Sarawak joined Malaya. Note it's Malaya as the SIA actually comes from Singapore if I'm not wrong, forming Malaysia. This came at the benefit of allowing us to move away from colonisation
Of course this did not last, since we became independent. The reason it didn't last was due to the opposing views and later riots all over Singapore (1964 riots)
We became independent on August 9, 1965
This was a pretty tough decision back then since we were still new and a lot of things could just happen and we would be gone.
And sure LKY removed political opponents but I'm like 90% sure he didn't just kill them, he probably exiled them or smth? Also many plans were made around this time, such as NS, bilingualism studies etc.
A lot of these are impt today due to the growing market of China, the warfare happening in Russia and Ukraine and many natural disasters. Having strong allies have allowed us to stay afloat and continue trading with big markets. Not to mention due to our policies, a lot of big companies receive benefits no other country can replicate.
Ye that's abt it, and erm idk why I typed so much.

As a singaporean, I feel so proud of my country, and just a few days ago, we commemorated our amazing late prime ministers 100 birthday

The main reason why Malaysia was kicked from Malaysia not because of opium, it was because mainland Malaysia worried that the chinese people will overthrow the malays in the country.
