A good rule of thumb for evaluating the amount of force you need to tighten them (or anything else) is of course turn it until you hear a crack and then back up a quarter turn (thanks AvE).

I once had to fix my wife's tortoise lamp. replaced the top and plugged it in to test... all worked fine, so I removed the bulb, removed the top and went to screw down the locking nuts... Dumbass here forgot to turn the switch off!, so, holding the live wire in place,  I reached for the earth wire.. .and zapp.. got a nice shock from the 240v mains. My arms tensed up and I felt a kind of "dull" vibration.. also felt kinda funky for a while. Didn't hurt, but was very sorry.
