Watch this magnet float in mid-air!

A little while ago, I made something called a YBCO superconductor. At room temperature, it doesn't do very much, and I need to cool it down with liquid nitrogen. Now when I drop a magnet on it, the magnet floats in mid-air.

Also, interestingly, you can see the liquid on it's surface *dripping UPWARD* toward the magnet because it's paramagnetic liquid oxygen that's condensed from the air onto the surface of the nitrogen cooled disc and its unpaired electrons are acting as magnets attracted toward the powerful neodymium magnet's field.

One of my favourite things in science, when I first saw a superconductor it sparked my interest in science which has led me to learn a lot and also led me to research archeology, maths and history. It keeps me stimulated and sane.

Fun fact: hitting a magnet hard enough makes it lose its magnetism

Edit: I know the same thing is true for heating the magnet. I just thought smacking one across the room is more on-brand for this channel.

I’ve seen someone make a whole track of these and made a floating train, one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen
