Question: If Lord Buddha was an avatar of Lord Vishnu, then why did he not talk about Bhakti? Swami Mukundananda enlightens us with an astoundingly simple answer: the teacher may be P.H.D. but if the student is in grade 1, the teacher will only teach 2+2=4. It does not mean that the teacher only knows that much. It means that the student can only understand that much.

At the time of Lord Buddha in India, people had become too ritualistic and were misinterpreting the Vedic scriptures. Lord Buddha’s message accordingly was that – the wise should purify the heart; find out how to purify your heart. Even in the Bible, a statement comes that meant – I have so many more things to tell you, but you can’t hear them now. Any prophet who comes teaches according to time place and circumstance. So, the time, place and circumstance demanded that Lord Buddha not speak of Bhakti.

If hearts are not pure and ready, Bhakti can not stay in it.

A beautiful answer to a very nice question about why Buddha did he not preach on bhakti. Swamiji says that prophets preach according to the level of knowledge of the devotees and the period in history. In that era of social atrocities, it was more important to teach people about ethics than devotion. Thank you, Swamiji!

Swamiji very simply clarifies why the teachings of the Buddha did not include bhakti. The masses at the time were misinterpreting the teachings of the Vedas and he had to guide them on a different path to help them purify their minds and their hearts🙏

This was once upon a time my question too. I was pondering upon the caste system and the consequences and thought Vedas gave a superior power to those who studied it and hence Buddha mainly focused on making a better self-realized human being than a person with Vedic knowledge for a better society. But I felt all over his teaching that there is no mention of devotion. Swamiji answered it perfectly - teacher teaches according to the class he is in. I am eternally grateful to you Swamji for guiding us. Radhey Radhey. - Cary, North Carolina.

Beautiful explanation. I also had the question and Swamiji answers it very well. A prophet will preach according to the time, place and circumstances. In order to make us understand, Swamiji goes on to give the a perfect analogy of a PhD teacher teaching a 1st grader.
