Hi! I'm an internal medicine resident, but today I'm shadowing a nurse! Join me for a unique day in the life of a DOCTOR SHADOW an ICU NURSE for a 12 hour shift!

This has been such a fun day and really an eye opening experience. The team work between nurses, how to mix and give medications, preparing for code blues, providing care to patients and of course... lots of charting!

HUGE THANK YOU to Amy and the ICU team for allowing me to capture these moments. It was truly unforgettable!

This is the kind of person I want to be a doctor. I have seen far too many young medical residents with the “better than you” attitude. She definitely wants to be a doctor for the right reason.

THIS SHOULD BE A REQUIREMENT FOR ALL DOCTORS

I loved how the nurses were so happy when they heard they were fully staffed for the day. That rarely happens.

“Caring for someone when they are so vulnerable is a privilege”...bravo-hit the nail on the head. 👏

Code Blue is so scary. R.I.P. that patient who didn't make it. This makes me so sad. :*(

In Germany it's actually mandatory to do an internship with nurses for 90 days when you're studying to become a doctor. Great video!!

I LOVE that you did this!! I wish more doctors and nurses shadowed each other - seems like it would help foster appreciation and respect between disciplines!

As a nurse, I believe this should be mandatory for all medical students and with definitely more shadowing than just in the ICU. In a true ICU, nurses are never caring for more than 1-3 patients at a time. On units such as surgery or medicine, nurses have been known to carry up to 6 patients on days, and 8-10 patients on nights. It's crazyness! Doctors need to see just how hard nurses work (often never getting the time for a lunch break or coffee break). Maybe then they'd think twice about some of the little and uneccessary things they ask us for help with...

Great video idea!

As a nurse I love this doctor, she treats everyone as a part of a team. And I love that either she chose to do this or that her program made this part of the curriculum -- it's very important to see what nurses go through so you can work better as a team. I think it'd be great for new nurses to follow a doctor too for the same reason because MDs work very very hard in hospital settings too. She should experience the absolute stress and chaos floor nurses go through with 6+ pts and often very short staffed. I've worked both ICU and a floor as a nurse and I'm glad I did the floor first, because now everything including the ICU seems so much easier. Floor nurses don't get enough respect.

As a nurse myself I don’t think some doctors have a clue to what we do in a shift. I think every doctor should have to follow a nurse.

It felt so weird knowing that a person just died, but you still have to work the rest of your shift like nothing happened

Rest in peace to the code blue patient... so crazy to hear professionals handling patients in near death situations so calmly. They prepared the room for the patient but the patient passed away in the middle of all this. Then the nurses and doctors go right back to what they were doing before, as if nothing happened. Thats obviously mandatory to be able to do as a professional (to not take things to heart) but it still is weird seeing the process in action. I have so much respect and admiration for these hard working people! ❤️

Having doctors in training shadowing nurses is a FANTASTIC idea. When you have have two very different aspects of a job they both need to have an idea of what the job of the other is like, because both can make the job of the other much harder or much easier. And you can only understand how to avoid the former and get to the latter if you have a good idea of what that job (the one you don't know) is really like.
Do they have the nurses shadow the doctors?
I worked as a welder for many years, and the best place I worked had an engineer that paid his way through college by working as a welder. He knew what the welders faced and considered that when he made up his designs. It greatly improved the efficiency of the welders.

Lol about the breaks for nurses! Trust me..not all hospitals are lucky enough to have enough nursing staff to cover each others breaks. I’m lucky to get a lunch most days and when I do, it means leaving my team to cover my patients on top of theirs!

I think this proves how much nurses are not valued enough and don’t get enough credit. They do a lot of the work and should be getting a hire raise. My respect and love to all nurses who bust their behinds all day♥️

A year ago my dad had to stay at the ICU, I was so depressed that I couldn't eat, sleep or sometimes even talk, while his doctors were amazing, the nurses were another level of kindness, they didnt have to but they cared for me and my mom, made sure we ate and had some rest, they even prayed with us and comforted us through the darkest times, I was so anxious they had me talk to a psychologist from the hospital, not to mention how amazing they were for my dad, I am so thankful my dad is alive and healthy, and its all because of them.
I cant wait for this pandemic to be over so i can visit them and give them some brownies for all the effort and hard times they must have gone through, thank you all front line health care workers!
