I review, breakdown and explain Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story on Netflix. I discuss the show and compare how accurate it was to the real life events such as the trial, the night of Jose and Kitty Menendez death, why they killed their parents, if the brothers did it, the truth about Dominick Dunne, if Erik Menendez met OJ Simpson and also compare it to the Dahmer series by Ryan Murphy.

How do you think this show compares to the Dahmer series that Ryan Murphy created? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

As someone who's been researching this case for years at this point. Watched the entire first trial, read the second trial transcripts, read legal proceedings, read books. This show was a complete mess. It did get some things correct but other things were either exaggerated or just made up out of thin air. Probably the most egregious thing is the characterisation of Lyle Menendez. He's like comic book villain levels of bad in this show and is completely at odds with how he was described by almost every witness who testified both for the prosecution and defence. The characterisation of the parents is also somewhat off especially in the episode which focuses on them. The show is held up by fantastic performances by the leads.

Gonna say this though, the actors freaking nailed it. Erics monologue to leslie (which definitely looked like a single take) ane lyles interview as well. Javier bardem and chloe sevigny were just amazing as well. The call he gave to his mother really gave out the idea of shitty parenting being a generational thing in some cases. A bit over the top in some parts but beautifully acted in my humble opinion.

Lyle wearing his father’s shoes was actually something refuted during the second trial. There’s video footage of him wearing green cowboy boots coming out of the memorial and not his father’s loafers.

Kitty was not shot 10 times, she had 10 areas of wounding and Jose had 6 areas of wounding. Shotguns typically create multiple wounds with a single blast.

There is only one recorded tape with Erik and Lyle’s voices on it, not multiple.

The brothers were evaluated by some of the countries most respected experts who concluded that the brothers were not “sociopaths” and were not anti social.

Calling Dominick Dunne the voice of reason is hilarious. Dunne had actually paid someone to lie and make up a story about Lyle. Martha Shelton years later came out and accused Dunne of paying her to lie about Lyle.

I would give myself whiplash every time I remembered this was based on real life. I don’t know how to explain it but this feels like a good Netflix show not the real life Menéndez case.

Both actors were fantastic regardless of how accurate you think it was.

If José Menendez wasn't portrayed as the sick terrifying man he was, then this show does a grand disservice to his survivors. Years later it came to light that he was a tyrant, bully that physically and sexually abused many in the music industry, including several members of Menudo. Smh

I don't know where to begin. Why Ryan Murphy thought it was acceptable to portray the brothers in this light is sickening. It seemed like he was using them to fill some exotic gay fantasy. Especially with Erik, who has repeatedly said he's not gay. And Lyle to be a cartoon vilian, and unlikeable mess. And Jose? This man was described by multiple as a feared man, no in this he was almost comedic. It was flooded with inaccuracy that every time something pivotal happened I looked back at their trials to see, and it was either completely false or he added some odd sexual scene with them.
This show had great scope to produce their story truthfully. Erik had made a statement completely defending his brother and SA victims. This will just turn the media on them further. I'm so sad it came like this, I wasn't expecting amazing. But I didn't expect lies and for the brothers to be portrayed as the monsters. Especially Lyle, once again. Honestly shame on Ryan Murphy, vile man. Don't use a real story and turn into part of your sexual pleasure. This was their life and you've done them the biggest disservice and other victims of SA abuse.

Accurate or not, Javier bardem is an incredible actor. His portrayal of Jose is chilling, scary and made me hate him with a passion. The show made me research the facts of the case. It has served a purpose.

Bro they literally had Lyle kissing his brother MULTIPLE times in this show!! How can you possibly say that this is good. In what way?
This is horrendous, to do to real victims of abuse. I don't care what nobody says

I expected the show to provide a neutral perspective, but it seemed to frame the brothers as either one being "good" or "evil." I also found the rumors about consensual incest and Erik's sexuality troubling, and the unnecessary nudity felt inappropriate, especially given the real-life experiences of what the brothers went through, so doing those unnecessary scenes just felt disrespectful…

The ending was also disappointing. It was weird for them to portray the parents having a "sweet" conversation about the future when the show had already established they were not good people. It felt off to portray them positively while villainizing Lyle for being assertive. Idk it just felt like the brothers deserved more justice and the representation just wasn’t there.

Episode 5 was one of the most powerful episode of anything I have ever watched before. Incredible acting...Incredible!

This trial was really a big deal at the time. People really discounted the sexual abuse of them as boys but I personally always believed the sexual abuse and fear aspect because the one brother seemed quite arrogant and the other was very quiet. I dont think either of them seemed to have the ability to make up such a detailed description and death with the public reaction. People didnt talk about sexual abuse, especially boys at that time.

As someone who had never looked this case up (happened when I was 9, the trial when I was a teen) and knew nothing other than they are 2 brother that 💀 their parents, I don’t understand people saying Ryan Murphy made the brothers completely unsympathetic.

Based just on the show and not reading anything else, I believed these boys and I felt the most sympathetic towards Erik because he didn’t stand a chance in that family.

The acting was spectacular all around.

The acting was good sure it what held the series together but the misinformation is horrendous they painted them like some cartoonish character not even shedding light on the tremendous abuse or how everyone around them witnessed it, and making Jose not the monster he is was just something else it is a good watch if we ignore the inaccuracies

Btw, did anyone notice that episode 5 was all in one shot? I don’t know if a lot of it was an improv or scripted from A to Z (which would be even more impressive) but kudos to the actors 👏👏👏

The acting was so powerful that has open a window of hope for the brothers. My heart goes to Erick. I hope he finds justice .
