Red shift | Astrophysics | Physics | FuseSchool

The world is said to be a big place, but the universe is much bigger and what’s more, it’s expanding all the time. How do we know this? Because of the evidence provided by red shift.

Red shift is not just from the Doppler Effect. It is also due to the expansion of space. As light travels from a distant star, space between the star and us is continually expanding. This expansion stretches out the wave length of light. Light with longer wavelengths we see as red light, hense 'red shift'.

Man, my professor started talking about Redshift out of nowhere and I got lost. Thank you so much for this!

Looking through many videos on red shift for my high school physics class. Yours is clearly the best!

This is why they built the JWST to record red light, even though with blue wavelengths it would have a better resolution.

honestly I watched a lot of videos about red-shift and had some questions regarding that those other videos didn't answer and this was the only one that did so I'm glad i found this and watched this one

I was puzeld by the idea of red shift when i was reading PH, HAWKING 'S book ( THE BRIFER HIOSTORY OF TIME ) then i checked it from you and found your definition very intersting , Thanks good work !!! .

Great video, thanks for sharing. There is an error in the graphic 22 s in - age of universe is 13.7 billion or 13, 700 million years.

"the further away a galaxy was the more its light was red shifted"
How did he first know it was far away without redshift as evidence?
"the further away a galaxy was the faster it was moving away from us"
If red on a galaxy means far away then that means galaxies are moving? Its like he first assumed the big bang was a fact and caused everything to move. Unless this was time lapsed and recorded over a period of time that claim makes no sense. A blue sky scraper means its far away. So its moving away from me?
If galaxies are moving "away from our own" that disproves big bang theory unless you invent untestable concepts like balloon expansion of the universe.
I would love to learn the reasoning if there is any but so far it doesn't seem like good science but rather guessing built on guessing built on unverifiable evidence.

"The energy-corrections, it will be recalled, are the total effects of red-shifts on apparent luminosities, provided red-shifts are not velocity-shifts. The latter interpretation seems to follow directly from the preliminary assumption of uniformity.
The assumption of uniformity has much to be said in its favour. If the distribution were not uniform, it would either increase with distance, or decrease. But we would not expect to find a distribution in which the density increases with distance, symmetrically in all directions. Such a condition would imply that we occupy a unique position in the universe, analogous, in a sense, to the ancient conception of a central earth. The hypothesis cannot be disproved but it is unwelcome and would be accepted only as a last resort in order to save the phenomena. Therefore, we disregard this possibility and consider the alternative, namely, a distribution which thins out with distance." -Edwin Hubble

There is no sound in a vacuum. Doppler effect from sound has no comparison for Cosmic Red Shift.
I'm not aware of a good explanation for Cosmic Red Shift. It's commonly stated that expansion of space will also stretch Photon wavelengths. Don't believe that because a Photon is a EM/Electromagnetic phenomena. And from what I've read, space expansion doesn't seem to alter Atoms which are EM phenomena. Thus the expansion of space shouldn't affect the wavelength of a Photon.

Since light's energy is measured in wavelength and energy is conserved, perhaps the energy lost by light itself redshifting is causing a feedback loop where the expansion causes light to lose more energy as redshift, accelerating the expansion.

Hi, this video was great! Maybe cover Motion in a circle for your next video? For AS/A Level if possible 😅

If universe is infinte, how is it expanding, i dont understand, it there a boundary in universe lol maybe just galaxies r moving apart

Universe expansion in quran
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيۡنَٰهَا بِأَيۡيْدٖ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

(Sahih International)
And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.

Big bang and universe expansion in Quran,

(Sahih International)
Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?

-Sura Al-Anbya, chapter 21, verse 30

وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيۡنَٰهَا بِأَيۡيْدٖ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

Isn't the Doppler effect just an analogy for what's actually happening when we're talking about light?
