The Doppler shift or the redshift is related to the velocity in which a galaxy or a star recedes from the Earth. We need to know the reference wavelength, the apparent wavelength, and the speed of light when using the 'doppler shift equation'.

Is it right that the nm over nm cancel each other out? Cause i thought you’d have to multiply by something like 10^-9 but i guess i shouldn’t do that

The observed wavelength is what you see in your instruments but how do you get the reference wavelength?
