AA Is Anything But A Cult?

While AA shares some characteristics with support groups and has a structured program, it lacks many defining features of a cult, such as authoritarian leadership, coercive control, and financial exploitation. However, as with any organization, experiences can vary, and some may feel uncomfortable with certain aspects of the program.

AA was useful for me for the first six months of my first 18 year sobriety. 2nd time around, in a different city, it was a nightmare of petty mindfuckery, gossip, public shaming, guru worship, etc. I only stopped drinking once I got away from it and have been sober (not had a drink) for 24 years since.

I never thought that AA was a cult, but the amount of self-dramatization to the point of amateur theater from speakers really turned me off, particularly the second time around.

I took what I needed and left the rest — and the rest was about 95% of it.

Thank you Terry, your talk has possibly saved a lot of newcomers that have been discouraged from coming to our fellowship, heck it saved my life for the last 45 years, and I agree we aint no cult.

I agree Terry g. I can nit pick anything and find faults in anything. If I focus on what's wrong with something else I never half to look at myself. God bless Terry g. Aa has only made my life better.

It is boring i was in aa for many years and after i left it i began to feel good. The same people at every meeting took the "stage" and hallelujah over the crowed . 16 years sober.

Life is sweet and sour.

Thanks Terry G! Agreed it is definitely not a cult, you could leave anytime you want and get your misery back!!! A real cult wouldn't let you just leave, (Jim Jones, David Koresh, etc...) And yes it's not for everybody. Been in the rooms a little over 3 years now and have seen people come and stay, and I've seen people relapse. If it doesn't work for you so be it. But it works for a lot of people.

Cults don't let you leave. AA wants you to stay on your own choice.

Basically some people are saying, how dare something come between me and my lifestyle that leads to drinking aka character defects? It's an illness and illnesses require antidotes, the opposite, just like poison requires an antidote, the opposite to get to balance and health.

A cult wants something from you, AA only asks for your desire to stop drinking, simple

I love AA. Some personalities get to me at times. But that's life. Let go. Let God.

Jesus heals. You need the New Testament, not AA.
