FILM DESCRIPTION:
When Pete and Ellie decide to start a family, they stumble into the world of foster care adoption. They hope to take in one small child, but when they meet three siblings, including a rebellious 15-year-old girl, they find themselves speeding from zero to three kids overnight. Now, Pete and Ellie must try to learn the ropes of instant parenthood in the hope of becoming a family.

throughout this entire movie, I kept seeing how Juan was terrified every time he messed up and a weird thing is no one every brought that up. That reaction only ever comes up when the kid is scared of being beaten. Juan was probably abused before.

See this is why you need to know the fine line between abuse and discipline. The girl shows how like of discipline can cause trouble while her brother shows abuse can go too far to the point trauma keeps you on edge constantly.

This scene really captures how three siblings can all have the same upbringing and how trauma can affect all of them differently. One is the mother figure. She knows the consequences of misbehavior and she's there to keep the younger children in line to try and keep them from being punished. One is the beaten-down constantly anxious figure. In his mind, knocking over a glass of milk is just as bad as murder and all he can think to do is beg for forgiveness in hopes he won't be punished. One is the problematic one. She doesn't care about consequences or if she causes her siblings to be punished either because she has no attachment to anyone or anything from being moved around and introduced to so many parental units in a short time.

When Juan accidentally knocks over his glass of milk and says "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry!", it makes me wonder how much abuse he's been subjected to in the past. Were the Muskies (the kids' former foster parents) physically and verbally abusive to Juan, not to mention other foster parents they've had in the system? I think maybe Juan has anxiety disorder and PTSD from past abuse.
Not to mention, Lita only wanting to eat potato chips and throwing temper tantrums that are not appropriate for a kid her age tells me that she's been poorly disciplined in the past.
And also, Lizzie is so used to being a "mother" to her younger siblings that she will not allow Ellie (or Pete) to parent her or them, which tells me a lot about their experiences in the foster system.
Who else thinks we need more movies like Instant Family (or in the vein of this genre - family dramedies)?
